Hammond, though fatally wounded by Anderson, ended the career of the man for whom picked agents of the Department of Justice had searched for years. Although they bluffed and shot their way to freedom through some of the most daring detectives and police officers of the big cities, it remained for two so-called “country cops” to end the spectacular careers of Chapman and his mentor. Reitz High School Stadium the greatest set of high school athletic plants in the country. The estimated value of the grounds and stadiums of the four high schools is set at $400,000. Bond issues have been sold for the buildings and the incomes have made the plants self supporting, according to Herbert Henderson, former Ohio State athlete, who is now business manager for the school board. single-handed and started him along the road that led to a death cell in the shadow of a New England gallows. But unlike the unfortunate Hammond, who didn’t even live to learn the man he had killed was the notorious “Dutch” Anderson, the Muncle policeman Is still basking In the glory and other rewards of the heroic act. Hammond’s widow and four children will be given the numerous rewards that were offered for the cafiture of “Dutch,” Federal authorities having waived all claims. The 'affairs of Gerald Chapman and “Dutch” Anderson form one of the most thrilling chapters In the history of American crime. They met for the first time in Sing Sing prison. There Anderson, as prison librarian, introduced Chapman into the world of books that later gave him the reputation of being a college graduate. The prison friendship continued after both the wiry little Irishman, Chapman, and the older Anderson were given their freedom. Together they plotted the famous New York mail robbery and together they went to Atlanta Federal penitentiary. Both Escape It was only a few months, however, before both bandits had escaped. Chapman was caught and brought back only to be freed again by the outside assistance of his friend, Anderson. The next thing that was heard of either of them was Chapman's capture at Muncie, Ind., where he had been in hiding at the rural home of Mr. and Mi’s. Ben Hance. The alleged "giving up” of Chapman proved the undoing of the Hances. Chapman was convicted of the murder of a New Britain, Conn., policeman and sentenced to hang. A few months later, in August of this year, the wrong from his viewpoint that had been done him by the Hances was avenged by Anderson, who came out of hiding long enough to kill them both as tlyy drove along a deserted highway near their home. Before dying Hance identified his slayers as Anderson and “One Arm” Wolfe, a Muncie police character, who is held at Muncie as Anderson’s accomplice. *
