Quin A. Ryan, the announcer of WGN, the Chicago Tribune station, who is one of the best sport announcers in the country, has a horror for evening clothes. Recently when Ryan was asked to appear at the Indianapolis radio show as guest announcer ho said that he would be glad to do so, providing he did not have to wear evening clothes. Upon inquiring why he had a dislike for formal dress he finally confided to the writer that the only reason was that he could not tie a bow tie. After we consented to tie his tie for him he finally was persuaded to don the “soup and fish.” Paul Crosley says that the announcer is only of secondary consideration on any radio program, but we beg to differ with him. Many fans have their favorite announcers and follow them wherever they go. A radio announcer can either make or break a radio station; it is up to him to put the program across. I will confess that some announcers should be hung, or at least shot, for the way they handle programs and put out a lot of “bunk,” but the

TAPESTRY COVERING POPULAR
Furniture Material Durable, Yet Answers Demand for Both Dignity and Refinement — Originaly HandWoven. By Molley Elliott Probably because of its innate appeal to the little touch of the artist in every soul and probably just, because of its utter durability and age-defy-ing qualities, tapestry-covered furniture will never go out of style. It has withstood the wavering from one decorative vogue to another, but It seems that as long as we have living rooms we shall have tapestry-covered upholstered furniture of one sort or nnother. It answers a demand for both dignity and refinement. Although the term tapestry is often wrongly used and the tapestry itself may be misplaced on a piece of furniture to which it is not suited, there is a piece and pattern to suit every type of seating furniture and a color and design to meet nearly every need. It would hardly be possible to Interchange the textile on any two properly covered pieces tyithout danger of a clash between fabric and the furniture. Should Study' Furniture 1 Studying a few pieces of welt done tapestried furniture will demonstrate how unwise it is to arbitrarily select a furniture covering simply because a person admires it for its own sake and not for its compatibility with the bit of furniture it is to adorn or the room it is to grace. The term tapestry, when rightly used, is as truly the description of a weave of material as silk is the name of a fibre spun from a cocoon, says one authority on the history of the fabric. He continues, in part; "Tapestry may be woven of any fibre and in any pattern, by hand or on a machine. It is the rnbst durable of all weaves, because its warp and its weft threads are completely interlocked. It will not ravel and moths destroy It with difficulty. Os small decorative and primitive tapestries many have survived from ancient Peruvian and Coptic civilizations, some from ancient Greece and Ejgypt. But the most famous tapestries, those reproducing in texture the masterpieces of famous painters, are those tapestries developed in the Netherlands and northern France during the fourteenth, fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. “These cost as much as SIO,OOO a yard. They are all, of course, handwoven. But machinery can now produce the tapestry weave, thanks to the invention of a famous Frenchman, Jacquard, who about 100 years ago, Invented an attachment to the loom, from which madliine tapestries are now called Jacquard weaves. Resourceful Fabric “While the machine product cannot equal in beauty and in durability the best hand-woven tapestry, any more than a lithographed reproduction of a famous painting can equal the original, yet machine-wo-ven tapestry for furniture upholstery is perhaps the world’s most resourceful fabric, being equal to any decorative requirement, and, if good materials be employed in its construction, being equal to any fabric woven today and vastly superior to many.” Famous old bits of tapestried furniture give us the ideal to which to strive. Being hand-woven to fit the. pieces they are used on. they are. of course, exquisitely woven by master weavers and designed by artists. But in this day of rerflarkable reproductions of old masterpieces It is possible to possess at reasonable prices, in view of the great durability of the fabric, machine woven tapestries, which ft intelligently chosen, fill the bill admirably. Furniture Revived The jolly little Queen Ann love seats that are being revived. If not upholstered In quaint prints or crewel embroidery are gayly covered with birds and flowers in lovely tapestry patterns that make them doubly attractive. Charming Jacobean settees are beautifully covered with tapestries especially fitting their dignity and richness. Arm chairs whose chief attraction is to rest the mind and body are enhanced with firmly woven fabrics that breath a gayety of Individuality like the presence of an amusing friend. Vogues may come and vogues may go, but tapestried furniture we will have with us always. DECIDE ON BEDROOMS Space Should Be Provided for Furniture Required. Much of the dissatisfaction with homes today is because they were not properly planned. Too much attention is given to the exterior, the closets and the basement. Before you have a plan drawn for a home, decide first of all how you wish to furnish the bedoorms. and insist that space be provided for the furniture you will require. Otherwise you will never be haj*py In your new dwelling, no matter how attractive its architectural plan may be to passersby. ONE ROOM AT A TIME Ts you have made mistakes In furnishing your home in the past it is not too late to correct them now by refurnishing one room at a time.

FURNACE GIVES SATISFACTION Rybolt Company Has Corps of Skilled Men. With the installation of a Rybolt furnace comes the satisfaction and comfort of a well heated home, declares T. M. Rybolt, manager of the Rybolt Heating Company. Users of the furnace are the best source of information conceding their heaters, he says, and they are hearty in their approval of this heating plant and assert that If fuel will burn at all it will burn In a Rybolt furnace and give greater heat than in nnother because of the unique construction of the plant. Besides the installation of this heating plant, tl)@ Rybolt company employs a corps of skilled furnace men who are competent to attend to any of the ills a hot air furnace Is likely to have. The outstanding feature of the corklined house is its year-round comfort. In winter it is unifoimly warm all over the house, and noticeably free from drafts. It has no “cold side”—no rooms that “are hard to heat.” In summer, even the upstairs rooms are cool. The same cork lining that holds in the furance heat keeps the sun's heat outside. And why? It is very simple when you stop to think of it. Building materials commonly used are heat conductors; that is, heat passes through them easily—which means hot rooms in summer, especially upstairs. and in winter, fuel waste, cold rooms, cold walls, and drafts. PROTECTS BATHROOM WALE A strip of linoleum left from the floor covering of the bathroom can be used to tack up over the tub to pre\’ent splashing the wall.
