WARM VALLEY . SEEN IN ARCTIC Airplane Explorer Finds Mysterious Land. Bu Vnitrd Press „ PRINCE RUPERT, B. C., Oct. 16. —More tales of a sub-tropical valley near the Arctic circle in the upper regions of British Columbia were told here by Col. J. Scott Williams of Montreal, who has completed a three months’ airplane expedition in the district. The valley lies north of Liard and the northernmost white settlements. There grass and verdure are found in amazing luxuriance. Flowers are enormous and much of the vegetation resembles that of tropical gions. This strange valley gets its individuality from hot springs. Although the surrounding mountainlr are covered with snow and ice, the springs keep the valley warm. As wonderful as the valley seemed to Scott and his mechanic, the airplane was equally as wonderful to the natives in various northern settlements. They regarded with awe two of their number who were given rides in the airplane. ANCIENT CORN GROWS Bn T’nitrd Ft ess VERNAL, Utah, Oct. 16.-—Seed from corn that grew in Utah long before the advent of the white man, is yielding from two to five ears to the stalk, on the farm of Jefferson Hall near here. The seed was found in an ancient cave of the cliff dwellers. Twelve hills of the corn was planted, but only two hills grew. Some of the stalks have attained a height of seven feet, while others are maturing at a height of four. A pecularity of the ancinent corn is that the leaves are much wider than the ordinary corn, some of them reaching a width of five inches. It also yields a greater number of ears, about five growing to the stalk.

ENERGY FOUND IN BIG STORMS Power in Lightning Flash Is Stupendous. Hu SEA Sereice LONDON, Oct. 16.—There 1b not a single second In a year without at least 100 lightning flashes. The Blue Book, issued by the Meteorological Office says the world experiences 16,000,000 thunderstorms a year, or an average of 44,000 a day. The amount of energy released is too stupendous for the inind to grasp, but the water now er the world has harnessed Is 25,000,000 horsepower. Double that amount is represented by one flash, consequently In any given second there is released from the clouds more energy than the world's water power yields in six months.
