COURT ORDERS IN PATROLMEN (Continued From Page 1) was heard. " Guloff was arrested by Patrolman Ed Ball, of the police booze squad and F'ederal Agent John King, who charged they found liquor in the kitchen of his restaurant. City court had flnod him SIOO and costs and sentenced him to thirty days on the Indiana State Farm. Judge Collins In this case demanded to know what the district officer wits doing and why the arrests were made by (the special officers. Snooping Denounced Then jKdge Collins denounced police for “snooping,” on the home of Eva Williams, colored, 1100 E. Thirteenth St. He discharged her, overruling the city court sentence of sixty days and a SIOO fine. She was arrested by Lieut. Earl Halstead of the booze squad, who said he confiscated a teaspoon!ul of liquor after searching her home. “We found just enough to make a smell and placed her under arrest,” Halstead testified. “I’d like to know what evidence was brought out in city court to warrant a fine and sentence as was given this woman,” said Judge Collins. “All this officer testified to was that he got a smell. Thie woman is discharged,” declared Judge Collins. Lieutenant Halstead declared be was tipped off to alleged law violation at the Williams home by neighbors. “This is Outrageous,” cried Judge Collins. “Thero is altogether too much snooping going on In country to do It any good.” Spiher Again William Dllly, 309 N. Noble 8t„ charged with blind tiger, ,was discharged when it was disclosed the search warrant used was obtained from Justice of Peace Henry H. Spiher in Wayne township. Since Dilly lives in Center township the warrant was declared illegal and void. Dilly was fined SIOO and costs in city court and sentenced to thirty days on the Indiana State farm. Jerome Hardy, 719 Virginia Ave., did not fare so well in his appeal. He was fined SIOO and costs and sentenced sixty days on the Indiana State Farm on a blind tiger charge. City court gave him a similar fine, but ordered only thirty days. Hardy admitted a previous conviction. Case of Harley Hatfield, 2819 E. Tenth St., who was arrested by deputy sheriffs, was continued until Wednesday morning for more witnesses. Case of James Peak, 645 E. Vermont St., was also continued until Wednesday morning. Miss Martha Meyers, 318 E. North St., whose case had been continued because the “missing search warrant” which resulted in her arrest could not be found was discharged after the warrant was finally located and presented to the court. Jt was first believed the warrant was Issued by Justice of Peace Henry H. Spiher. but later found In the court, of Justice of Peace Isidor WulfsonJ Judge Collins sustained a motloiq to quash the warrant and Its affidavit when it was disclosed only a very small amount of liquor was confiscated. In the lower court, Miss Meyers was fined SIOO and costs and sentenced to thirty days at the Indiana Woman’s Prison. Chief to Investigate Police Chief Herman F. Rikhoft said lie would investigate charges made by Judge Collins. He staffed, however, he did not know who the two district men, ordered into court,, were, and that it was almost impossible to find out. , “No date or hour is given,” he said. “Nix men could be involved. Two shifts may have been mads. “My officers have been instructed not to make any raids until they have thoroughly investigated. A man’s home is his palace, until he starts to run ;i barroom.”
