Father and mother are always thinking of your welfare—there isn’t a thing within reason they wouldn’t do for you. But they may unknowingly have been risking your life every day. When '•'mi are at dinner tonight with dad, ask him this question: “Dad, is our school firesafe?’’ Perhaps he won’t be able to answer—he may not know. Ask dad if he knows that somewhere in the country a schoolhouse burns every day. Ask him if he knows that one-third of all the schoolhouses in the country are nothing better than firetraps maybe your school is one of them. Os course dad knows that buildings can be built that will not bum. They are being built everywhere, every day. If your school is firesafe, you’re lucky. If it isn’t, ask dad what he is going to do about it. You have a right to know. • * * The highest type of firesafe construction is concrete. ONE ROOM APARTMENT IS POPULAR
Individuality and Taste May Be Expressed Even in Small Quarters Care Must Be Exercised in Choosing Furnishings. By Molly Elliott The one-room apartment, the growing popularity of which has brought about many a culmination of romance that would otherwise have wasted away in long years of waiting, deserves its place in the hall of fame. The one-room apartment has brought happiness to scores of young persons whose finances otherwise would never have met.the demands of Cupid’s insistent urging. But the clever bride does not allow the limited space to cramp the expression of individuality and taste even in the one-room apartment. In the apartment house, built to meet the Increasing demands for inexpensive living quarters, the living room is usually about 12 by 16 feet in size with average height ceilings of about feet. Walls of this room should be painted a soft green or gray. Deep Ivory can be used with dull finish woodwork. The windows must be handled with care to avoid causing a stuffy crowded appearance and to insure a blending of the walls with the hangings. Curtains Suggested For well-balanced windows the curtains may be of green and gold striped, sun-fast taffeta or any of the charming color combinations in soft sunfast taffetas that blend with the walls. If the windows are Inclined to be ill-arranged drapes of the same shade of the walls will be unobtrusive and will soften the lines somewhat. This material comes fifty Inches wide and frequently one length will serve for both sides, treated with French pleats and looped back with a simple gold cord and tassel. Cleverly designed pieces of furniture for this type of room are two cupboard affairs, which have all the appearances of bookcases, but which in fact, are a wardrobe and a dressing table. These may be placed at either side of the mantel. A settee or small davenport and a side table on which Vnay be placed a conservatively colored lamp may flank the fire place. A gate leg table under the windows or between the two windows may be covered with a piece of fine embroidery or tapestry. A day bed may be covered with chintz to match the covering of a small armchair. Painted Bed The bed may be painted a soft green or gray to blend with the walls and at one end a decorative screen may shut off the entrances to the tiny kitchenette and bathroom. An open bookcase similar in design to the two cupboards on either side of the fireplace may be placed at one end of the day bed. Pictures must not be too numerous. The arrangement of the furniture in this type of room must be essentiially simple. A tiny console table and lamp with hanging mirror above and a small chair of intricate design may grace the entrance. Infinite ingenuity may be employed in the final touches on such a room.
JOISTS ALL IMPORTANT Defects in Framework in Houses Can Bo Hidden. The carpenter—expert and specialist on frame work—a member of America’s great wood jury—j peaks. He says: “Upon the stability of joists, studding and rafters will depend the service we may expect from all other parts of the house which are fastened to the frame work, both outside and inside. “We must not fool ourselves and think, because the framework is covered up, that the material, workmanship and construction specifications do not count. If these are not right, we may not see the fault, but the effects W'ill be apparent so” years, in cracked plaster, sagging, squeaky floors, leaky walls or roof, sticking windows and doors and other serious defects. In the house pictured above there is a living room furnished with an overstuffed suite and one extra chair, davenport table, small end tables, lamps and pictures. Two bed rooms are furnished with dainty sets of boudoir furniture, one with a pretty vanity mirror and bed lamps and boudoir lamps. The dining room has a suite of rubbed finish walnut which Includes six chairs and a period style table and long low buffet with beautifully mitered mirror hung above. The kitchen is equipped with porcelain top table, two chairs, a gas range and small compact refrigerator. Rugs and linoleum are laid to correspond with the colors of each room. A feature being emphasized in the showrooms of the People's Outfitting Company, Is the "Good Housekeeping” outfit for four rooms that they have arranged for a lump sum of $495, including rugs and linoleum. This feature has for many years been known as the Royal outfit, but as a result of the recent merger of several stores this company has been able to add to both quality and quantity of the outfit for the same price. This group of furniture, it must be understood, is not arranged to be bought as it stands, although it may be if so desired, but more as a suggestion as to what may be selected from the line at that price. The actual selection is variable as Is the payment plan which according to the "People’s Way” is arranged to i meet the needs of the buyer. A pleasing departure from the customary aquarium is anew, large, cone-shaped glass bowl In clear, deep green or amber. This has a low stand made of wrought iron in a delicate leaf design. This low type of aquarium, intended for a wide window sill or large table, is a great improvement over the old square or round glass bowls with their ungraceful Iron stands.
