FIXIT: I have made eral efforts t.o have the city dump some cinders in my alley at 2829 Robson St. with no avail. It is absolutely impassible. Police Chief Rikhoff ordered that no machine could sit it front of the house all night. So I proceded to spend $l6O building a garage and still my machine sit out all night because my first effort to get to my garage resulted in me getting stuck in my galley. It was so bad I had to get someone to pull me out. JOHN D. SPATTLDING, 2829 Robson St. Mr. Fixit agrees you have a real grievance. W. P. Hargon, clerk of the street commissioner's • office, will investigate. DEAR MR. FIXIT: Since the sewer was put in Abbott St. from AVest to California St., the gutters have never been cleaned out to allow the water to run into the sewer. Every time it rains puddles stand in front of each dwelling. MRS. B ~ Property Owner. Hargon said the repairs are In progress now. DEAR MR. FIXIT: I wish to ask you to find out why the lights on the Delaware St. bridge are not lighted at night. During the past month part of the time they were not lighted at all; other times (hey were out at night and lighted during the day. For a week they were lighted day and night and now they are not lighted at all. AVith Delaware St. torn up south of the br: !ge and a detour necessary around 1~, it is an absolutely dangerous placo to drive at night. DELAWARE STREET. SEEK IMPORT BEHIND MOVE OF THOMPSON Council President Plans to Appoint Inspectors on Nonpartisan Basis. Politicians were scurrying about today seeking the import of the move of President Ben H. Thompson of city council to appoint 226 precinct election Inspectors on a non-partisan basis. Thompson, himself a Republican, backed by one other Republican member and the Democrats of the council, has announced he will favor selection of inspectors from an equal number of names submitted by the chairmen of both Republican and Democratic city organizations. Precedent Seen The action, it is pointed out. would create a precedent, as appointment of inspectors has always been considered political spoil. \ However, Thompson said he would not permit the chairmen to select the precincts for the men they recommend as inspectors. This provison would necessitate each chairman naming 225 "men, of which the council would select one-half or one less than one-half. "I believe there are enough votes
in the council to regulate appoint- j ment of inspectors In this manner.’’ j Thompson said. ‘‘l believe it would be fair.” Theatrical Gesture Home politicians regard Thompson’s move as a theatrical gesture. They point out that in all doubtful precincts where elections may be stolen by Irregular officials, council has the right to determine whither a Republican or Democrat inspector shall cast the decisive vote on the election board, which consists of two judges, one representing each major party. 200 TAKEN IN RAIDS Chicago Police Invade City’s “Protected" Gambling Dens.
