FLORIDA TRIES TO BUY PRESS (Continued From Page 1) or four hundred articles a day appear in the press of the country criticising, minimizing and poking fun at the Florida boom. "We must get a brand new lot of interviews and other material to supply financial papers and editors with confidence stuff." To carry out the scheme of buying favorable opinion, the Slate legislature will this year be asked by Mayor Alsop of Jacksonville, to contribute another $1,000,000 to the fund out of the State treasury. Job Getting Hard But it is daily becoming more difficult to convince the crowd. The State is dangerously near to being hoist by her own petard. The press agents, myriad in number, have over told the story. They have promised too much that they chn’t deliver. They have made vacant lots look like thriving cities In their word pictures, given little villages the character of great metropolises and have otherwise so exaggerated an otherwise worthy enterprise that the visitor may remember not the good, but only his disappointment. Most of the municipal advertising is placed by two agencies, one of which charges 25 j>er cent of the money used ns its fee. The copy sent out is, uniform in chameter and one of the set jobs of the ad writer this year is to overcome unfavorable reactions caused by his too effective work last year. How he overcomes it is up to him. Boosters Subsidized One of the latest schemes of the subdivision men. often taken advantage of by municipalities, is giving land to prominent writers, official investigators and the like and then to advertise that these persons have acquired home sites in their neigh borhoftds. Some of the biggest Florida lxtosters in the public press ate Florida land owne-s of this kind. The special newspaper edition Is another favorite. Many magazines and newspapers will shortly come forth with whole sections devoted to Florida, part In pnid advertising and part In editorial eomment and feature articles, favorable of course. lielty stunts was perpetrated recently by the Florida Development Board which arranged with a noted novelist the special assignment writer to pay all his expenses on a jaunt through all parts ol the State, the various Chambers of Commerce and land promoters paying for his entertainment at all stops. He is now engaged in writing a novel, subject to the board's supervision, in an office In the Metropolitan tower. New York, also furnished by the board. Sure, They Buy It This novel, boosting Florida, will pay well from the start because business men throughout the &tate agreed to subscribe for large numbers of copies, an autographed copy to go with each lot bought. Railroads are doing their share In bringing In the mob. Special excursions spew thousands over the Florida landscape daily. I have seen eight train loads leave Atlanta in one night with Atlanta citizens who could make the trip to Jacksonville and return, with ten days' stopover, for sl6, which is considerably less than the one-way fare. Naturally, if you are curious, itch for easy money and believe in Santa Claus, you'll take one of these cheap excursions. But if you do, prepare for plenty of discomfort. Part of the advertising fund in most cities goes to maintain some form of entertainment for the winter crowd. Almost every town has a hope-to-be popular song which is played at every performance of the band hired to play for the company and keep the speculators happy. St. Augustine pays SIB,OOO a season for lts band and other cities pay a like proportion. Buy Out Actors Musical comedy and vaudeville artists are offered attractive sums to sing in these town songs as part of their acts or to boost Florida generally. Public and private amusements and unusual attractions which will make a feature material up North are hired or underwritten at the resort towns. Professions golfers and swimmers with national- reputations nre paid fancy figures for just playing and boosting certain cities' golf courses. The press agent does anything to make unusual color or atmosphere for his stories. The State census shows only 500 Seniinole Indians extant but almost all advertising men at some time or other use a picturesque Seminole In the picture or refer to the thousands of the almost vanished race who may be seen. About the only place you can see them is near Miami where a halfdozen charge you for taking a picture of them in costume, which they don purposely for the occasion. For a little more you can wear the costume and they'll take your picture. Alluring names are given the subdivisions. Among them "heights,” "terrace," "highlands,” “hills," and the like predominate. Actually there are few subdivisions more than ft foot or two above sea level. The highest land is Florida is lower than the tallest building in Miami, and if you buy a lot in Something Height, you may find it a little hum mock in a swamp. The only time a name means anything to the Florida press agent Is when It is pretty. Picturesque old places like Hog Town. Goat Wallow, Jake’s Swamp and Snake Bend have been rechristened.
SWAN-MYERS TO BUILD FACTORY Plans Announced by Pharmaceutical Manufacturers. Plans for a $150,000 four-story, brick veneer factory and laboratory at 215-17 Senate Ave., were announced today by the Swan-Myers Company, 219 ‘N. Senate Ave., pharmaceutical and biological products manufacturers. The addition will adjoin the present plant. Two dwellings now on the site will be wrecked, and the new holding will extend to the Levey printing Company plant, Ohio St. and Senate Ave. In addition to a •factory, the new plant will house on of the most complete biological and chemical laboratories in the country. Work probably will start soon after the first of the year, and it is expected that the factory will be occupied next summer. The Swan-Myers Company was organized in 1909. An export business has been built up recently. Officers of the company are R. M. Cain, president; O. H. Myers, vice-presidenl, and F. W. Scheigert, secretary-treasurer.

CHARGE NAMES j FORGED TO END G.O.P. MUDDLE Democrats Hold Purported From Ousted " Committeemen. Someone has been forging tha names of ousted Republican precinct committeemen, William E. Clauer, Democratic city chairman, declared today. Clauer said that postcards which have come Into possession of the Democrats indicate someone hae been attempting to "smooth over" the furore caused by the ousting of several regularly elected Republican committeemen by Oeorge F. Coffin, Republican city chairman. Coffin has virtually deposed the elected committeemen by refusing to recognize them and by giving their duties and privileges to men of his own choosing. Signatures Forged Clauer said that the postcards bear the signatures of the ousted committeemen and purport to tell voters that the committeemen gave Coffin their consent that he remove them. The signatures are forged, Clauer charges. "In one ward alone we find that five elected committeemen have been replaced by the Coffin organization," sa'id Clauer. ■ letter Cited Clauer charged duly elected committeemen have found themselves unable to work with the present G. O. P. organization and cites the following letter from Russell R, Corey, 135 N. Linwood Ave., as a typical Instance: "Having Just resigned as Republican precinct committeeman of the Seventeenth I’reclnct of the Ninth Ward, I am going to offer you my entire support in the coming election. I, for one, don't want BUI Armitage as mayor for four years more. Anything I can do along organization and lining up votes in your behalf will bo done gladly. This precinct was Democratic. It turned for Shank and Armitage, but I think we have had enough!" “Olauer's assertions sound ridieui lous to me,” said George V. Coffin, Republican city chairman. "Os course I don't know what anyone else is doing, but I am sure no cards of that nattye have been sent out from city headquarters."

LOOT WORTH $875,000 Jewel Thieves Stage Two More Major Robberies. /?w VnltcA Prcm CHICAGO, Oct. 3.—Two huge jewel robberies early today brought the total loot of gem thefts in the Middle West in the last twenty-four hours to $325,000. Edward L. Morso of New York had hjs trunk, containing jewels worth $150,000 stolen from him, while it was en route from his hotel to the railroad station. Switched baggage checks were responsible for the theft. He had been given a check for a trunk which was not his own. He later found his trunk stripped of its treasure. J. Dreyfus. New York diamond salesman, was robbed of $150,000 in jewels by three bandits in St. Paul. Dreyfus had just entered a Jewelry store where he was to display his stock when the men approached him. They ripped open his vest, snatched the small case in which the stones were carried and fled. Two bandits robbed Frank Rlffins, salesman, of $75,000 worth of Jewels on the ninth floor of a downtown skyscraper late yesterday, after beatng and binding him. Gems valued at $700,000 were stolen from Mrs. Jessie Waolwortla Donahue in her New York hotel thfl middle of the week by a thief whl entered her room while„she wa bathl ins. \ PAY ROLL STOLEN Bu l nitrA Prm LAWRENCE, Mass., Oct .B.—A bandit, masked and carrying a gun in either hand, held up th# paymaster and a guard in the wood mill of the American Woolen Company, the largest worsted wool mill in the country and escaped with nn undetermined amount of cash her® today. Company estimates placed the pay roll total at $15,000 and police believe the robber got away with moro than $2,000.
