HOMAGE TO BE PAID TO RILEY Greenfield to Observe Birthday Anniversary. Bu Times Special GREENFIELD, Ind., Oct. 2. The birthday anniversary of James Whitcomb Riley, Oct. 7, will be observed In Co-eenfield this year in a big way. Plans have been formulated by the park board and city officials, for observing this occasion in connection with the official breaking of ground for building the Riley Memorial Park. Four thousand school children will be in the big parade, with which the day’s program will be opened. The parade will pass the old Riley homestead on Main St., and proceed to the park, where the morning will be employed in planting trees and shrubbery by the various schools of the city and county. In the afternoon, a program will be given in which it is planned for Governor Jackson to participate, by officially breaking ground for construction of the park. It is also planned to have present, to speak and give Riley readings, nationally known and prominent literary men and women. Mayors, city officials, schools and their officials, fraternal and civic organizations of surrounding cities and counties, will attend and participate. Many features are being worked out that will be announced later. The Panama Canal zone, with an area of 436 square miles, had a population of 27,143 in 1924.

Shortridge Echo Starts on Twenty-Seventh Year

The Shortridge Echo, the first high school dally In the United States, is becoming quite an old institution. The Echo has shown a marked development in the past twenty-six years. It has kept in touch with the student body and the aims of the school. The first Echo was published Sept. 26, 1898, and an Echo was given to every student on that date. A drive was then staged for a circulation among the 200 students of Shortridge. The circulation of the present Shortridge Echo is over the 1,250 mark and a subscription drive is under way.
