BRST'SH FLIERS TO WEAR ARMOR Army Gunners to Get Helmets. Mail Vests. 'Bu Vnitf.d Pr--LONDON, Oct. 2. —Chain mail vests and steel helmets may soon be standard equipment for machine gunners in British bombing planaes. The proposal is being seriously considered by the British Air Ministry, folllowing a study of the greater vulnerability of the position in which the gunner in an airplane fights, as compared with the pilot. The pilot is protected from direct frontal attack by the bulk of the engine in front of him, and from behind by the position of the gunner's body and considerable equipment. Only a part of his head appears above the fusilage. The machine gunner in the rear cockpit, however, has no protection from rear attack, and must in addition expose a considerable part of his/body above the cockpit if he is to stand so as to get the maximum efficiency from his guns. Plans to house the gunner in revolving steel turrets are- not considered practicable, owing to the fact that such arrangements necessarily limit the gunner’s range of vision. Oct. 2.—A worldwide campaign to improve working conditions of sea workers Is to be launched next year by the International Labor Bureau. Immediately following the eighth International Labor Conference, which will ho held In May, 1925, a special International Labor Conference will be held which will be devoted exclusively to the consideration of maratime questions. The second conference will rank as the ninth International Labor Conference, and it is expected that it will be attended by virtually the same delegations that take part in the first. Over fifty nations are expected to be present. The two principal items on the agenda of the sea workers’ conference are: First, international codification of rules relating to seamen's articles of agreement, and, second, general principles for the inspection cf conditions of work of seamen. The International Labor Bureau has just sent a questionnaire to all of the sixty nations affiliated with the bureau in order to get not only all the information possible on the
two subjects, but also the views of the governments themselves. From these two categories of in-
