To the 11,674 Indianapolis Members of This New Profession of Business
, Business is no longer a mere hit-and-miss means of making money. The last quarter-century has seen it develop from a battle of wits and secrets—with “diamond cut diamond” the accepted, code—into the newest and most fascinating among the world’s profession. The American business man, by measuring his achievements not alone by profits, but as well by service to the community, has given business a wholly new and permanent standing. Asa result, this newest of professions has a definite science of its own —the Science of Modern Business. The first requirement of any profession is recorded experience and an interchange of ideas for the benefit of all. At the opening of the twentieth century there was no recorded BUSINESS experience worthy of the name. Suspicion and secretiveness were

A New Kind of Pool Is Formed In December, 1900, when the idea of recording business experience was still new, the first issue of SYSTEM—then a tiny sixteen-page pamphlet—was published. It was devoted entirely to the interchange of business ideas of proven merit. It was the first business idea pool ever created, the only kind of a pool in which every member puts in a part and draws out the whole. The “SYSTEM idea” took root in American business, and grew rapidly, as business men quickly learned that the one sure way of bettering their own business was to profit by the successful policies and plans of others. The World’s Largest Institution of Its Kind Meets the Demands of the New Profession As business developed toward its present place among the great professions, the demands from business men for more knowledge, more recorded experience, more scientific facts, multiplied. And so around SYSTEM grew a great international publishing institution devoted exclusively to gathering and distributing facts and ideas which men and concerns everywhere can use to better their businesses. SYSTEM has become “The Magazine of Business,” a great periodical with the largest circulation in the world at $4.00

almost universal, business policies were shrouded in mystery, and the business man carefully guarded his precious secrets lest others should discover and profit by them. But today all is changed. Secretiveness has given way to receptivity and reciprocity. And out of this new willingness to exchange tested policies, plans and ideas has grown a remarkable Literature of Business —a literature as vital to the business man as his legal or medical works are to the lawyer or the doctor. N And today back of this new literature of the new profession of business stands a great institution, which for twenty-five years has been devoted entirely to collecting and distributing the best business ideas and experiences for the benefit of business men and concerns everywhere.
(or more) a year. It has held rigidly to its original purpose of recording each month the best and newest businessbuilding ideas —ever meeting the new requirements of business, until now it records policies as well as methods and brings together the views of leading economists to indicate the underlying trend of business for the executive’s guidance. With SYSTEM still its central unit, the A. W. Shaw Company, in responding to the many specialized demands of this new profession of business, has grown into the largest institution of its kind in the world. Other Shaw publications have been added to meet special needs. FACTORY, the Magazine of Management, was established in 1908 to serve the special requirements of manufacturers. INDUSTRIAL MERCHANDISING is of prime interest to executives concerned with industrial selling. Other periodicals are the HARVARD BUSINESS REVIEW and the JOURNAL OF LAND AND PUBLIC UTILITY ECONOMICS. Specialized developments include British SYSTEM, requiring a complete overseas staff, and the Bureau of Business Standards of the Shaw Publications. And books are now published, at the rate of one a week, to meet every demand of business as a science—books devoted to basic business principles; manuals of established business practices; texts for schools and colleges giving business courses; the Harvard Business Reports, which report “cases” in business practice exactly as reporting services keep the lawyer abreast of judicial decisions.
The Only Complete Service of Its Kind The result is that the Shaw Publications now furnish the only complete service of its kind to the members of the new profession of business. The Shaw Business Books comprise an authoritative standard reference library of recorded experience covering every important phase of business. SYSTEM, the Magazine of Business, keeps the executive in touch with current developments in every branch of general business activity by supplying him each month with profit-making ideas, policies and methods which he can lift from its pages and adapt to his own business. The other periodicals meet specialized requirements in a similar way. The Bureau of Business Standards, Incorporated, of the Shaw Publications, through its work of conducting investigations and research in many fields, is continually adding to the fund of basic business knowledge. Will You Profit From This Service? If you are an active business executive with daily problems to meet and master, the Shaw institution, with its wealth of material from'' which to draw, can be of the same degree of real help to you that his technical magazines and books are to the doctor or the lawyer. Hundreds of thousands of progressive business men are already using the resources of this institution. The service they obtain is complete and authoritative. Yet its cost is negligible compared with its value to their businesses. If you will check and send the coupon below, we will tell you—of course without obligation of any kind—whatthis great publishing institution, built to meet the requirements of the new profession of business, can furnish you on the subjects of special interest to you.
