EFAVORS SCHOOL FORESTRY WORK Official Says All Children Should Have Course. Charles C. Deam, state forester in the conservation department, de- ! plores the fact that it is not compulsory to teach forestry in our public schools, for ho declares that if this subject was a part of the curriculum, Indiana would, in the course of a few years, have thousands of advocates of reforestation for waste acres where now a few hundred persons are endeavoring to bring about this economic need. Deam points out in a report to the conservation commission, that some of the schools now teach forestry, but says it is unfortunate that all of them do not include it in the regular course. Aside from the fact we are a timber-using nation, planting waste and idle acres to trees, reclaims land now unproductive. Some months ago Deam wrote a descriptive work on “Trees of Indiana” and is now writing on the grasses of this State for the conservation department. He also is author of ‘‘Shrubs of Indiana” a companion book to “Trees.” STATE BUILDING JAMS Indiana Contracts Awarded in August Total $10,201,300. Building and engineering contracts awarded in Indiana during the month of August reached a total of $10,201,300, according to F. W. Dodge Corporation, New York. This was an increase of 18 per cent over July and cf 2 per cent over August of last year. Included in last month’s record were: $3,140,600, or 31 per cent of all construction, for residential buildings; $2,073,800, or 26 per cent, for public works and utilities; $1,220,000, or 12 per cent, for educational buildings, and $1,169,000, or 11 per cent, for religious and memorial buildings.
