Fifteen Stations on Air at Same Time Cause Listeners Grief. JtV NBA Herr ice NEW YORK, Sept. 21.—New York is In a muddle over the confused broadcasting situation that prevails here. Fifteen stations within the metropolitan area alone, most of them on the air at the same time, is the most serious fault to which listeners and others object. Yet congestion of the air Is only part e s the difficulty facing the fans in and around the big city. Program features conflict, advertising fills the air, stations refuse to be silent for a night. It is a veritable battle for supremacy, the result of the Government's failure to grasp the situation at the very beginning and regulate it. Now, listeners protest, they

may as well discard their big sets and take to crystal receivers. They can’t get out of town before midnight at the earliest, and even then some of the New York broadcasters ado more power ;n an endeavor to reach farther across land and sea. Broadcasters contend there should be no silent night in New York, because local fans with small sets and | dis ant fans would be disappointed by the complete shut-down of the New York studios, on which they depend for entertainment almost entirely. In addition, the broadcasters say, even fans with larger sets, living in New York, do not care to get outside of the city during the early broadcasting hours. They are satisfied with local concerts, trying for distance only late at night or early morning. So, little chance is seen for a complete shut-down of all New York studios any day in the week. EUROPE TO PACIFIC To test the extent of high power, Earle C. Anthony, owner of Station KFI at Los Angeles, has sailed for London to listen In on his own station. He wants to prove in England that, with American receivers, broadcasting stations of the Pacific coast can be brought in with the same ease as that encountered by Australian listeners.
