'HONE RECEIVER* PUZZLES EXPERTS European Stations Brought in by Simply Lifting Receiver From Hook in Railroad Station.
V VKA Service PHILADELPHIA, Penn., Sept. 21. —A “mystery radio set,’’ by which oncerts and addresses broadcast lightly from London, Paris and Berlin are received by a courtry i'ailroad station simply by lifting the elephone receiver from the hook and applying it to the ear, has been ound. The “phantom set,” as it is called >y the listeners-in, has attracted the ittention of the Bell Telephone Company and electrical engineers of that corporation have been sent to investigate and determine its possibilities. The “freak receiver” consists soley of a five-mile stretch of telephone vire, used exclusively as a railroad elephone, which serves as an leriaJ, and no other equipment other han the regulation telephone apparatus is present.
For Two Years For two years the night agent at the station of the Philadelphia & Reading Raiiroad Company at Brandamore, a few miles north of Coatesville, Penn., has heard the most dis ■ ant broadcasting stations by simply istening in on his telephone. Radio fans within a radius of several hundred miles have visited Brandamore and all have left nystified. Various tests have been nade by fans to learn why European stations are received clearly each night, while residents of the vicinity •vith the latest type radio receiver an not bring in other than the iJnited States. G. B. Engee, electrical engineer or the Bell Company, and several assistants have just arrived in Brandamore, through the courtesy f the railway company in a special rain, in an effort to learn the cause and the "freak reception.” In the” Troup were A. T. Dice, superintendent of the Reading Company, and other officials of both the Reading • ind telephone companies. No Clew Found A preliminary elimination of the entire ltngt i of the “aerial” was made, but no clew was found as to how the ett er waves are received and amplifier. Engee has announced that he and his assistants will remain in and near Brandumore for ■several days, and if by that time ’hey have not learned what arrangement of the equipment permits the reception, he will ask the heads of the telephone company’s research department in New York to make an exhaustive investigation. The theory that a jokesmith has connected a radio set with the system was dispelled in the preliminary nvestigations. The experts also pointed out that it would be a hard matter for a jokesmith to be on hand ; wenty-four hours a day for two years. “We expect to find a principle

A MAN in California looked in the San Francisco Examiner. A woman in Texas looked in the Houston Chronicle. A boy in Maine looked in the Portland Express. All three papers said “Opera tonight from Chicago Station WON—wave length 370 meters.” In their three corners of the continent, all three radio listeners turned the dials of their Day-Fan Radios to 370, and there was the opera. A\ hen any Day Fan Radio in any state can dial a newspaper number and get that station, “the needle in the haystack” searching is gone from radio for good. If the station you want isn’t in the newspaper, its number is in the Day-Fan Air Telephone Directory. Day-Fan is the Super Radio, because it is super-ac-curate. /

important In the field of radio research.” “It will assuredly be interesting to learn how programs from European stations can be received clearly and without any interference or ’fading’ by applying an eighty-ohm telephone receiver to the ear and when the ether waves are not amplified.” Any attempt to change the system as it exists results in complete failure of the wires to serve as an aerial. Several times receiving sets were attached to the wire, but everything “went dead.” The best reslults have been obtained at the railroad station at

Brandamore, the investigators wer® told. The night telegraph operators have enjoyed-the finest of European concerts without being bothered with dials, tubes, batteries or static. Any Wave Ijength The only objection, they told investigators. is that they have no "selectivity” and are unable to tune in what they know to be on the air. The mystery set appears to be “geared" to receive any wavelength, the investigators were told, as wireless messages are received from the most remote parts of the earth, as well as the radio programs.
Day-Fan is the super radio because it is super-simple. Look, turn, listen. Day-Fan is the Super Radio because it is superselective—getting the station you want instead of the station that wants you. And finally, Day-Fan is the Super Radio because it is super-toned—the most important point of all—sweet and iruo as a bell in the treble of the flute, sturdy and clearcut and strong in the organ base—wider in its musical range than any other instrument —the very voice of the speaker, or the note of the violin—the musical instrument of radios. Any of the dealers listed in this advertisement will enjoy showing you the ten Day-Fan models, four and fivetube' table or console, triple or single dial control, from $75.00 to $300.00. You owe it to yourself to own a DayFan.

By a peculiarity of the “set” no local or nearby stations in this country are ever heard. On one occasion, the experts learned, a radio headset was attached to a railroad rail near Brandamore and instantly a European station was heard. The experts are still trying to trace the cause. They have work for several days ahead of them. A detailed examination of every foot of wire and every part of the telephone system will be made. At the same time European stations are still being enjoyed by the Brandamore railroaders.
