The World Will Soon Know That ‘Hitchy’ Can Bea Poet as Well as Good Comedian
1i | VERY g-reat man has his I ill I weai ' *' ess . so they say. > J And the world has just discovered that Raymond Hitchcock has a “weakness.” He is now about ready to burst out In verse. He has been writing poetry for years, but the world didn’t know anything about it. Os course "Hitchy,” the star of “Service for Husbands,” coming to English’s next Monday night for three days, does not consider his poetry a weakness. Every star has his hobby and poetry is “Hitchy’s” hobby. The fact is that Hitchcock has written a hook of poems, “The Love Songs of a Clown,” which will be published soon. At the conclusion of each theatrical season he retires to his home at Great Neck, Long Island, New York, where he and his wife, the former Flora Zabelle, so agreeably recalled for her numerous musical comedy successes prior to her retirement a year or two ago, spend the summer serenely, and much as less famous persons would. Here it is that Hitchcock follows those pursuits he loves best, outside of his .main interest, his stage career and among these pursuits his study of English literature, and particularly the American poets, takes no small part. From the advance proofs of “The Love Songs of a Clown” this bit is quoted: Night crept into my garden And hung her shadows there. I reached to catch a moonbeam And found it was your hair. . I stooped to hiss a rosebud. And io. it war your lira. And I brushed aside a dahlia And held vour fingertips. It must be admitted th£t in these lines there is no suggestion of the “Hitchy” of “Hitchy-Koo” or Zeigfeld “Follies” memory, nor of "All Dr essed Up and No Place to Go,” nor of “Such a Way With Her,” the song he sings in “Service for Husbands.” However, another page shows Hitchcock in a “Hitchy” mood: A grasshopper hops on a hoppole, where The hops hung high in the heated air. And he hoped as he hopped That the ripening lions Would be used for something That the law now stops.. ’Twas a hectic hope that this hopper had. But hang me if I think 'twas bad.
