SMOKE CODE IS NEED IN FIGHT UPON NUISANCE Mr. Fixit Finds Inspector Should Be Given Backing. Let Mr. Fixit indicate the right road for public improvements. He is The . Time* representative at the city hall. Write him <>t The Times. There’s only one method of alleviating smoke nuisances; that is to back the stand of H. F. Templeton, smoke inspector, for adequate legislation to cope with the situation, Mr. Fixit has learned. DEAR MR. FIXIT: You seem to have good success along other lines. How would you like to try your hand at smoke prevention? Some part of the district bounded by New York, Rural, Southeastern and State, is continually swept by clouds of smoke from the Pennsylvania shops on E. Washington St. and it 3eems very little if any effort is being made to prevent it. HENDRICKS PLACE. Templeton contends he cannot correct this condition under present regulations that allow thirty minutes foi* coaling an engine. The new smoke code permits only six minutes. It is before city council now. If you would help solve the diff.culty, ask your councilman to vote for the smoke code, Templeton says. DEAR MR. FIXIT: Please see to it that S. Meridian St. has lights. The last few nights we have been In total darkness. We would not m*r.d it if the Merchants Heat and Light Company would save their -'urrent a the noith side. .TIMMY. The trouble resulted from breaks in the underground cable requiring considerable time for discovery and repairs, Mr. Fixit was informed by oompany officials. The lights burned brightly Saturday night. DEAR MR. FIXIT: Will you please try to have a street light put at the corner of Marker and McKinley Sts. It is SC' terribly dark that it is dangerous for person to be out. There are no lights on McKinley at all and none on Manker south of Nelson St. I live at 2745 Manker St. and there are four vacant lots north of me and three south. I am here alone most of the time, as my husband is a traveling salesman. I am not acquainted with any of the neighbors and am afraid to go out in the evening to a picture CUMHERCOOiS" _ are lingering and annoying. show or any place, a/rit i3 so dark. Please, Mr. Fixit, try to have a light put in on tjie corner, that is 2800 south on Manker St. There are no lights west on Shelby St. MRS. M. CLIFFORD, 2745 Manker Ave. Mr. Fixit was as surprised as you will be when the board of works at his request ordered the light you seek. However, it will just drain the treasury, Mr. Fixit was informed. DEAR MR. FIXIT—I thank you for your effort regarding the investigation on Thirty-Seventh St. between Clifton and Crescent Sts. You say the principal reason is the lack of sewer facilities. We think you were misinformed, as there, is a sewer in the first alley south of Thirty-Seventh St. from Crescent St. west to the end of Thirty-Seventh St., which has been in eight years. The valuation of property relative to the street improvement may be applicable. But if there were water and gas on the street, it would not apply, since if the water and gas were in, the vacant lets on the north side of the street would be worth SBOO each. As it is. no one wishes to build on them. Surely we are entitled to water and gas. Let us see what can be done. We have petitioned each year for nine years for water and gas. J. W. LOVETT. Indianapolis Water Company officials decided Saturday to defer installation of mains because their inspectors recently checked property owners and found there were not enough desiring to pay water rates to warrant the extension. A lack of agreement among property owners is reported by the Citizens Gas Company. However, the manager of their service department told Mr. Fixit gas could be obtained by any resident who comes to the office and signs a contract. There is possibility, for delay because it is so late in the season. You are invited to discuss the situation with the manager of the service department of the gas company. TO LEOTA AND STATE ST. TAXPAYER: Please write Mr. Fixit again, giving the name of the railroad, the exact place where the nuisance occurs and explain just what produced the black water. BETTER CARE FOR VETS Report. Will Be Submitted to American Legion Convention. Better facilities for caring for disabled World M ar Veterans are now provided by the Government, it was shown in a report received at American Legion headquarters. The report will he submitted to the Legion convention in Omaha, Oct. 5-6.

Spiritual ‘Powers’ Offer Easy Riches at Chesterfield. Note: Th ; s is the sixteenth and concluding article o{ the scries by Virginia 6wain, reporter for NEA Service and Tne Indianapolis Times relatin her experiences while spendinfr five months lnccnmlto investigating prac tlces of spiritualists and mediums at their national summer camp. Chesterfield. Ind. By Virginia J ran KK 4 Sender Writer HESTERFIELD, Ind.. Sept. 14.—Among the royal roads b_J to wealth. few surpass medlumship. That worldly gifts speedily follow spiritual gifts the Chesterfield mediums demonstrate. The rapid rise of the Riffle family from poverty to prosperity is an illustration of the monetary value of spiritual powers. Since Mrs. Mabel Riffle's entrance into the Chesterfield ring, at a time when the earnings of her husband as a telegraph operator were the family's sole income, the Riffles have acquired valuable real estate in Anderson, two automobiles and an abundance of ready cash. Not only is Mrs. Riffle a practicing medium herself, but she is also secretary of the association. Her sister owns the dining room concession and her mother, husband and son have positions on the grounds. Earnings of Mediums But the earnings of mediums who pursue none of these, sidelines are not to be sniffed at. They range from S4O to S6O a day. For example, Mrs. Mary Murphy Lydy seldom has fewer than twenty persons in her materialiizng seances, at $2 each. During the day she holds a trumpet circle and gives many private readings also :it $2. It is a lean day which does not net her S6O. These profits continued during a season of six weeks and multiplied by the number of mediums working Chesterfield, which is about twenty, total a yearly return of approximately $50,000. Added to this amount, the gate receipts. the hotel and cafeteria profits, the collections taken at the audito-
