KLAN IS DRAWN INTO QUIZ OF COOK SLAYING YoirSfs Are Released on Bond —Pastor’s Wife Is Threatened. Bu United Press VINTON, lowa, Sept. 11. —KuKlux Klansmen and anti-Klansmen today were drawn into the investigation of the murder of Mrs. C. B. Cook, head of the county Women’s Christian Temperance Union, who was shot to death last Monday evening. Two masked men late yesterday entered the home of the Rev. C. S. Kleckner, pastor of Christ’s Church, and demanded of Mrs. Kleckner whether her husband was a member of the Klan. Rev. Kleckner was assistirq it the funeral services of Mrs. Coc.< at the time. “Is your husband a Klansman?” the men demanded. “Tell us the truth or we’ll manhandle you. If he has come here to raise more hell, we’ll ” When Mrs. Kleckner answered she did not believe her husband was a mef.ber of the Klan, the men departed. The woman notified police and they sent for blood hounds to help trace the masked men. Known Klansmen and anti-Klansmen will be questioned, police said. The Kleckners recently came here from Onawa, lowa, where Rev. was known as “the marrylng^Btor.” IvWWiwhile police and the coroner had failed to arrest anyone in connection with the murder. They re iterated today that they expected to make “an Important arrest soon.” Seven Vinton youths, arrested on a charge of throwing rotten eggs at the Cook home several months ago, were released on SI,OOO bond each. METHODISTS TO VOTE MERGER Proposed Amendment Also Before Conference. Bn United Tress JEFFERSONYILUS, Tnd., Sept. 11.—Two important issue* came before the Indiana conference of the Methodist Church here for discussion today. Issues Involved ratification or rejection of proposed amendments to the church constitution. Another proposes union of the northern and southern branches of the church, split since Civil War days. The second amendment would put laymen on a basis of equality with ministers in conferences. Separate votes on the issues are to be taken by the laaymen and clergymen. Reynolds, general secretary of the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce, today receiveed word frotn Earl L. Ferguson, manager of the Chamber’s convention bureau, that the 1927 convention of the National Federation of Postoffice Clerks will be held in Indianapolis. Ferguson is now in Kansas City, where the postoffice clerks are meeting. Ferguson also said that the Ladies' Auxiliary of the Federation of National Rural Letters Carriers’ Association, whose meetings are held at the same time, would hold their 1927 meeting here. The combined meetings should draw nearly 4,000 persons. Carl Stimnson of Indianapolis was re-elected national vice president of the federation. MEMPHIS SEEKS SHOW DeJflktlon Confers With Manager of Dairy Imposition. Headed by J. Rowlett Paine, mayor of Memphis, Tenn., a delegation from that city arrived here and met this afternoon at the Claypool with W. E. Skinnner, general manager of the National Dairy Exposition, to be held here Oct. 10 to 17, to point out the advantages afforded for holding the 1926 exposition at Memphis. Facts presented will be referred to exposition officials and will be given every consideration in deciding upon the location of next year’s exposition, Skinner said. FUND DRIVES ARE PLANNED Combined Effort Will Be Made in Fall. Plans for the annual Community Fund-Red Cross campaign this fall were assuming definite form today following renewal of the agreement by which the Red Cross roll call is combined with the Community Fund campaign. Following a conference Thursday between directors of the respective organizations, a contract was signed by Fred Hoke, fund president, and William Fortune, Red Gross chairman. Every contributor of the fund will be enrolled with the Red Cross. Mrs. P. C. Reilly, Mrs. O. E. MeMeans and Mrs. Mark V. Rinehart wero named to fchoose a 100-acre camp site for the Camp Fire Girls near Noblesville. O. Caplinger has announced. Caplinger said that Inasmuch as a resolution was now in effect requiring the teachers to use the Bible, he intended to see that the board members also benefit from it.

EX-EXAMINER MAY GET JOB Terre Haute Man Mentioned for State Position. John W. Parrett of Terre Haute, former motor bus examiner for the public service commission, was being mentioned as possible successor to H. D. McClelland, chief clerk of the State highway commission, providing McClelland is transferred to the superintendency of the highway garage. Parrett was engaged in banking in Terre Haute and Clinton prior to becoming auditor in the State automobile' license department several years ago. He also is being considered for appointment with the State banking department or State board of accounts. While McClelland is Go% r ernor Jackson's choice for the garage assignment, his appointment is being blocked by John D. Williams, director.
