Spirits Get You Going and Coming at Ch es terfield Lecturers’ "Philosophy’ Supplements Mediums’ "Phenomena’ at Camp.
NOTE: This Is the twelfth of a series of articles by Virviriia Swain, reporter for NEA Service and The Indianapolis Times, relating her five weeks' experiences at the national camp of mediums and spiritualists. Chesterfield. Ind. By Virginia Swain NEA Servlee Writer HE STERFIELD, Ind.. Sept. 7.—Once inside the gateyof u Camp Chesterfield , the person seeking spirit "phenomena” is surrounded by a dragnet. Going and coming the spirits get him. What the mediums cannnot do to him by their "phenomena," the lecturers will do by their "philosophy.” Daily in the auditorium he listens to lectures by “the finest spiritual thinkers of America.” Night in the grove he listens to more talk by mediums, lectures and converts. The propaganda disseminated in these meetings is of a kind to appeal strongly to his religious instincts, as well as to his love for his dead relatives and his longing for communication with them. Each meeting is begun with prayer and hymns. Constant avowals of belief in "divine intelligence" and in the beneficence of the “angel world" lend a religious air to the rank absurdities that make up the lectures. Bible Is Quoted The Bible is quoted constantly, and a list of references to mediumship in its pages is circulated among the visitors. For the older folk, all the old church songs and religious phrases are retained. For the younger visitors of radical tendencies, Chesterfield poses as an outpost of advanced thought, scorning orthodoxy and greeting the death of William Jennings Bryan as a distinct blessing to spiritualism. Dr. H. W. B. Byrlck of Indianapolis, a spiritualist minister, announced himself as a reformed Methodist, and expresses his remorse for having misled so many thousands />f people, during the period when he was preaching “hellfire and brimstone, as unscrupulously as the rest of the Methodists.” For the benefit of the liberals also, the spiritualist lecturers line themselves up with Martin Luther, with I)ft.rwin and with all rebels against the old order. Dr. Oscar Edgerly, a lecturer during the second week of camp, made the statement that Mrs. Clarence Darrow was a confirmed spiritualist and that Darrow himself was a splritualst at heart, though he had not made public avowal of it. Dr. "Will J, Erwood, pastor of a Rochester (N. Y.) church and editor of the Radiant Life, a "magazine of Inspiration and helpfulness for folks who think,’’ affects the professional air, with an astounding Windsor tie and immaculate flannels. He lectures "under control” of several different spirits. Hindu Lectures One of these is a Hindu who talks expansively of going into the silences of Vishnu and the road where flying fishes play. watching this Hindu "teacher" take control of Dr. Erwood. Now the doctor is the owner of a pair of Irish blue eyes, and Irish smile and a rich and charming brogue. The Hindu, therefore, finds himself facing a problem of changing the nationality of his medium before he can speak through him to the waiting audience The Melting Pot Dr. Erwood rises, spreads out his hands in a gesture of oriental benediction. His features writhe out of Irish merriment into a semblance of long-faced Hindu gravity. And when he speaks, his voice cornea from the depths of his throat, with very careful enunciation and inflection, to destroy all traces of brogue. The audience shivers and the Hindu gets under way. He tells his listeners that it is their duty to unfold tha mysteries of spiritualism and to induce their friends to visit Chesterfield. He remarks on the superiority of the Chesterfield mediums over the thinkers of his own race. And he announces that by speaking to his secretary, one may be granted a private reading from Dr. Erwood, at two dollars per. Next—Some queer effects of spiritualism. HOUSE CLEANING OF NAVY ASKED (Continued From Page One) aluminum companies are preparing to submit bids," Commander Jacob H. Klein, chief of the naval court of inquiry which probed the disaster that took a toll of fourteen lives, said today. v The three sections of the ship, lying in grotesque, jumbled heaps near Ava and Sharon, Ohio, lay baking under a scorching sun while thousands of horn-tooting, dusty motorists clogged every available road leading to the scene. Curio seekers continued to swoop down on the battered remnants of what had been the pride of the navy, But were repulsed by State Militia with fixed bayonets who kept the more intrepid souvenir seekers hopping about while the court of Inquiry once more inspected the jumbled rpass.
