LEWIS URGES CONSERVATION Union Head Issues Message to Workers. Labor Day messages from Union leaders were contained in the issue of United Mine Workers Journal for Sept. 1. “Labor Day is purely an American institution, born of an American idea, founded upon the rock of American Liberty, and celebrated by American citibens,” said John L. Lewis, international president. “That is what makes Labor Day an occasion of utmost importance in the yearly cycle of American history. Out of it all have come a deeper realization of the rights of those who toil and a broader recognition by everyone of what labor has done and is doing for this great country of ours. “Labor is and must be conservative. It must build and not destroy. Labor makes all the things that are conducive to greater prosperity and happiness for all the people.” Lewis said. Thoma;' Kennedy, secretary of the union, sf id: “Labor day of 1925 should fi id the hosts of labor imbued with anew determination to fight and strive more vigorously than eve.' before for the achievement of those principles necessary for indust-ial and political liberty.” ARRESTS ON DECLINE Slate Shows 138 Men and Nine Women Are Listed. Murray Hill knew about it when the station agent sent a man to the home of August Mazzucco with a telegram. Celestino Mazzbcco, the blackhaired, smiling- young sailor, was the sole support of the family, which includes Mrs. Mazzucco and a 15-year-old sister of the dead man, Caroline. The little home the family occupies is mortgaged, heavily. The government insurance carried by young Mazzucco will just about take care of that. And then —well, what the Mazzucco family faces isn't exactly pleasant to think about. C'elestino Mazzucco joined the Navy at the age of 16. been a member of the dirigible’s crew ever since she was built, and the town was proud of him. "Boy Just Right" But the town’s pride didn’t rest solely upon his helping fly the biggest airship in the world. Nor on the fact that he had been on the crew of the Leviathan when that boat was a transport during the war. Nor even on the fact that ever since he was 16 he had sent all but a small part of his monthly earnings home to support his father and mother. “That boy was just right,” said one of the townsfolk. "He was a sort of model for all the kids in town. He never boozed or chased the girls or anything like that. He was everybody’s frierid and he always had a smile for all of us. I Just can’t understand why a boy like that had to go.” Perhaps you can get a notion of the sort of man Mazzucco was from the fact that everybody speaks of him yet as "the boy." Just a couple of hours before the telegram announced his death, the postman "delivered Mazzucco’s last letter, written shortly before the Shenandoah left its hanger at Lakehurst. Sister Was Pet In the letter tlws sailor spoke enthusiastically of the coming trip, mentioned having made anew allotment of his pay imder which his parents would recefve a monthly check direct from tin’ Navy Department, and promised to get a leave and visit as soon ar the ship returned from the West. ■* The Mazzucco home was filled with people soon after the news of the tragedy reached here. There were relatives standing around, trying vainly to- comfort the father and mother. There were a couple of school girls sitting with their arms around Caroline, the dead sailor's sister, who was sobbing lupartbrokenly. Little sister was a pet of the big sailor. On the porch and in the yard were townspeople, seeking by their pressence to tell the family how they, too, felt the loss. And the thought on everyone's lips seemed to be: "I can't understand why a boy like that had to go.” MARRIED SIXTY YEARS E’l Time * Special NOBLESVILLE. Ind.. Sept. 7. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph L. BETTER LIGHTS TO BE AIM OF NEW CAMPAIGN $ Merchants Company Wan's Glare and Gloom Eliminated. “Few people realize,” said H. H. Thurber ofthe Merchants Heat and Light Company, that good light does not necessarily mean lots of light.” For that reason the appliance sales department of the company Is conducting an industrial lighting activity campaign to eliminate both glare and gloom, reduce production costs and improve the workers’ conditions. In conjunction with this activitiy the sales organization will assist through the selling of better light in the home and store. The campaign will last from Sept. 15 to Dec. 12. During that time Thurber said, it will be the aim of the activities committees to impress upon the minds of factory owners and home keepers the importance of the efficient use of artificial light? “We frequently use too much light Improperly placed said A. C. Crandall of the Merchants Company, resulting in a condition as detrimental or perhaps more so, to the human eye than would be the case if an insufficient amount of light were used and the object of our sales department during ihis activity will be the selling of better light in all its applications without respect to quantity other than that necessary to give the best light for the application.” IjONDON—A drunken driver drove a light truck out into the ocean from a sandy beach. The car didn't sink, but started to float out to sea.
