*Mother 9 Yanks Coat Tails of a Hesitating Governor pauses Thirty Miners’ Wives, Locked Up in Jail With Children, to Sing All Night in Protest.

When wives of Pennsylvania miners were arrested for hooting: at strike breakers. Mother Jones had them carry their babies to court. A chorus of walls greeted the announcement th it the women must gro to jail. After -■> ing Jailed, the women sang throughout the night, at Mother Jones’ suggestion, and in this way brought about their release Returning to West Virginia in 1913, Mother Jones organized an expedition of strikers to Charleston, and tried to pull the Governor out of his office by nis coattails. * • * (Published by permission of Charles H. Kerr & Cos., Chicago. Copyright. 1925.) ryrn HE miners in Greensburg, Pa., I went on strike for more * * * wages. Their pay was pitifully low. In answer to the cry for bread, the constabulary were sent into the district. One day a group of angry women were standing in front of the mine, hooting at the strike breakers. The sheriff came and arrested all the women "for disturbing the peace.” I told them to take their babies and tiny children along with them when their case came up In court. They did this and while the judge was sentencing them to pay S3O or serve thirty days in jail, the babies set up a terrible wail, so that you could hardly hear the old judge. He acowled and asked the women if they had someone to leave the children with. I whispered to the women to tell the judge that miners' wives didn’t keep nurse girls. All Sent to Jail HlTwo mounted police were called to the women to the jail, some ten miles away. They were put on an interurban car with two policemen to keep them from running away. The car stopped and took on some strike breakers. As soon as the car started the women began cleaning them up. The two policemen were too nervous to do anything. The Editor’s Note Views on political and industrial questions either expressed or Implied by these articles are the views of Mother Jones, the author, and this newspaper assumes no responsibility for them. The articles are published as the self-told story of the life of one of America's most widely knov a women. motorman said it was against the law to stop except at the station. That gave the women a little more time to trim the fellows. When they got to Greensl urg, the women sang ass the car went through the town. As they got off the car before the jail, a crowd cheered and cheered them. Sing All Niglt The sheriff took them upstairs, put them all in a room, and let me stay with them for a while. I told the women: |"You sing the whole night long. Ibu can spell one another if you et tired and hoarse. Sleep all day and sing all night and don’t stop for any one- Say you're singing to the babies." The sheriff's wife used to go up and try to stop them because she couldn’t sleep. the sheriff sent for me and asked me to stop them. "I can’t stop them,” said I. “They are singing to their little ones. You telepi or.e to the judge to order them loose.” Complaints came in by the dozens;

from hotels and lodging houses and private homes. “Those women howl like cats,” said a hotel keeper to me. “That's no way to speak of women who ire singing patriotic songs j and lullahies to their little ones,” said L Town Sleeps at Last Finally, after five days to which ! every one in town had been kept awake, the judge ordered their release. In the fall of 1912 I went to Eksaale, W. Va. A strike had been going on in that section of the coal j country for osme time. A weary lull tyad come in the strike and I de- j cliied to do something to rouse the ; strikers and the public. At a prearrarnged place I met the I boys in Charleston. The camps had turned out in full. I told the lads j to follow me, and they did, through | the streets of Charleston with a ban- j ner that said: "Nero Fiddled While j Rome Burned."' We gathered on the statehouse grounds. I went into the Governor’s l 'office and requested him politely to ! come out, as there were a lot of Vir- j ginia’s first families giving a lawn j party outside, a id they wanted him to talk to them. “Mother,” he said, “I can’t come I with you but I am not as bad as you J may think.. Beads ‘Red’ Document "Come,” I said, pulling him by j his coattails. He shook his head, j From a platform on the statehouse steps I read a document that we had j drawn up. requesting the Governor 1 to do avtay with the murderous guards and gunmen. We asked him to re-establish America and American traditions in West Virginia. I called a committee to take the document into the statehouse and place It reverently on the Governor’s table. I then spoke to the crowd and to conclusion said, "Go home now. Keep away from the saloons. Save your money. You're going to need it.” "What will we need It for, ! Mother?” someone shouted. "For guns,” said I. “Go home and | read the immortal "Washington's | words to the colonists. He told those [ who were struggling for liberty j against those who would not heed j to hear to buy guns.” The next morning alarms were ringing. A senatorial investigation | was immediately ordered to Inquire j into the blight that was eating out , the heart ofthe coal industry. Once ! again the public was given a chance ! or hear the stifled cry of the miners in their eternal struggle. NEAT: Handling a machine gun crew.
