TWO NAMED BY DEMOCRATS TO LEADSPEAKERS Clauer, City Chairman, Says Primary Registrations Are Being Checked. |[ William E. Clauer, Democratic cfty chairman, announced today the enlargement of the committee'? headquarters in the National City bonk Bldg, fifth floor, and the appointment. of Russell Ryan as chairman of the speakers bureau and of Mrs. Albert Dugan, 1421 Broadway, as oh airman of women speakers. "The campaign work of the committee is now further advanced than It; has ever been at this stake in a city campaign," said Clauer. "We have been working on the registration for more than two weeks and have completed checking the primary registration in a number of precincts. "Myers for Mayor Clubs have been organized in seven wards and meeting places for them have been established. There will be a club perfected in each ward of the city with its own headquarters in less than t*ro weeks. Walter Myers is conducting an aggresive campaign for mayor and the other candidates are all busy among the voters. “Checking the names registered at the primary as certified to us by the city clerk reveals some interesting material for this campaign. The number of names certified to us as representing the voters who participated in the Republican primary cannot be reconciled with the number of votes credited to each of the three Republican candidates for mayor. Either the number of persons who attempted to vote in the Republican primary and failed was beyond credence or the registration lists certified to us contain the

Bu L'nitrd Prt* CHICAGO, Aug. 28. —Forty postal clerks were In custody today in connection with a plot to rob the air malls between Chicago and San Francisco. One of the clerks is said to have revealed the entire plan to Federal authorities. Thus far postal Inspectors have declined to make public all details of the scheme. It waa learned, however, that Government employes first suspected something was amiss when a telegram was received from San Francisco reporting that a valuable pouch of air mail which left Chicago Tuesday had not reached the Pacific coatt until last night. Whether the mail bags were rifled here before the airplanes took off or at some other point along the way has not been determined, Inspector E. D. Aldrich said. MOTION PICTURES

INDIVIDUALITY IS SEEN IN HOMES
Architects and Designers Add Touches of Artistic Atmosphere to Houses— Both Exterior and Interior Must Have Attention. By Molly Elliott Individuality, that phantom quality possessed by some and desired by others, is finding its way into the architecture of the American home as it has into the costume of the American woman. It is felt more and more strongly even in the less expensive homes and is giving designers and architects a merry run for their money. Unquestionably this is their day—they may let their fancy run away with them and still produce bits of picturesque home designing that stimulate the imagination and inject into the landscape something most pleasant to gaze on. Even the 6mall house whose atmosphere is essentially “homey" Is planned with artistic individualism that makes Jt beautiful. Often this touch of individualism is achieved such a small thing, too, in the same manner that women achieve it with a ch&raceristic hairdress, or the way they wear their rouge. Roof Helps A simple little house is rendered attractive by a thatched roof effect made by the rounded curving eaves. Gray-green shutters on a pearl-gray frame house makes a Quakerish aris tocrat out of a mousy bit of a dwelling. Clever little uneven flagstones sunk into the sod and arranged like stepping stones up to the front doorstep make the approach to one domicile a joyous adventure. And. best of all, the entrance itself, planned with greatest care and attention, may speak the words of the gracious host within long before the knock is anwered. After all, the achievement In successful home building is to build homes that invite In the spirit of the head of the house. In the same way as a person's own personality repels or attracts, the home Invites or rebuffs intimacy. This thing must be uppermost in the minds of homo builders the same as in the minds of character builders. Look to Interior Likewise must the interior be given the attention of the individual taste. The very arrangement o £ the rugs, the pictures, the lamps bespeak the individuality of . the owner, or at least the head of* the house. Thoughtfulness In the placement of little tables and lamps here and there, attention to the position of the more Interesting rugs where they will most likely fall under the scrutiny of the guests, and the more comfor .ible chairs where they are the most accessible, all these things make for the ultimate “come back again" spirit. And not only do these little touches of personality to the home give the greatest comfort to guests in that home, but they also give no end of satisfaction to those who live within walls of friendliness ami charm.

WINDOWSHADE CONCERN GROWS H. C. Curry and Wife Have Complete Line. An Important business of selling window blinds that are Just right has grokn in a year’s time through the efforts of H. C. Curry and Mrs. Curry. 1 Prospect St. Last October they started their little business in their own home and by December had outgrown their quarters and moved into their present location. Today they have their hands more than full and their books show a steady Increase, says Mrs. Curry. Their line of shades is as complete as that of any concern in the city and their personal estimates are made on each Job. In new homes for which they have supplied the shades, they have also put up curtain rods. Mrs. Curry believes that people have grown tired of the ordinary green shades, and the scalloped, fringed, cream and tan colored shades that have become popular are a relief. Many persons are using the hand tinted cambric blinds in their new houses, she said, and also many use the oil opaque cloth.

Many and varied are the effects which may be secured from an original four-walled house plan. By dropping the roof line and projecting an unobtrusive dormer through it and by carrying the entrance facade up into a peak which breaks the eave line, the architect has achieved rare distinction in this home. The attached garage, which could be omitted if desired, is so planned as to add to the beauty and unity of the whole. Portland cement stucco, in white or colors, applied to its natural hounding background, concrete block, adds much to the attractiveness of the house. Through the permanency of this type of construction the beauty of the home would be perpetuated. The hollow spaces In the block Insure coolness in the hot days of summer and assist in keeping the house warm in winter with a minimum use of heating fuel. The owner, taking pride in the appearance of his home would find further satisfaction in his choice of a building material a ethe years passed without the usual expenditures for upkeep, repair, and depreciation. DISTINCTION IN ROOFING Persona in this day give as much attention to the roofing of their house as they would to the selection of a hat- No end of distinction is given the newer houses with the use of unusual shingling. Touches of beauty are added by gabling and dormer windows.
