Lady fair —fairest and loveliest lady outside of Paradise, as Francois Villon would call you if he had ever known you—do not pity'me. I am perhaps the most unfortunate man in all the world except your husband. I have jay sweetheart with me always, unmarred by the slightest act or word that I would not have or do or say. She always does the thing that pleases me most, and her lovely voice falls Into speech that caresses my ear like a song. If I am weary, she soothes and rests me by her silence. If I am joyous, her merry laugh rings out. If I am serious, her sane counsel is attuned to my mood. Always she is exactly what I would have her, and nothing less. You must remember, if you read this—for I am not sure that you will —that if you are not perfect. It is because my heart does not know what kind of a woman is perfect, for I have endowed you in my imagination with everything that my heart desires. I have halted at the daring heights of beauty to which my eyes were lifted, and in my memory I am still in that ratified atmosphere. The moon is growing pale. It is sinking toward the horiozn. A faint, cool breeze ripples the sea, and tells me that merning is about to break. No longer the brilliant path from my yacht to the darkening sky is studded with jewels. No longer does love whisper that only it is eternal; relentlessly my mind tells me that the moon is cold and dead, that her radiance and beauty are imparted to her. That this radiance and beauty shines on me is a perfectly impersonal thing. I know the Lady of the Snows is not for me. Goodnight, my love. Long before this you have sat in the nursery with your boys on either side of you. You have listened ro their lisping prayers. You havfc bant over their beds, and they, after looking into your eyes, have gone asleep secure in the knowledge that you would care for them the whole night through. If, dear lady—ls sometimes while you are with your boys, you would register a wordless prayer that in my solitary journeys about the world there might be other nights like this when I alone —although you are all unconscious of me—am with you! What a glorious life that must have been of Peter Ibtjitson’s—a life of dreams that was much more real than the life that every one knew God grant my hourly prayer that 1 may live ether times of such happiness a.-, has been mine out here in the darkness tonight. Your humble worshipper, MELVILLE SARTORIS. (Copyright, 1925 NEA Service, Inc.) NEXT—Letter from Sydney Carlton to Leslie Prescott. ROTARIANS TO LEBANON About 150 Rotarians and their families plan to attend an all-day outing of the organization at Lebanon Thursday. A golf tournament will be a feature.

Martha Lee Says 1 NOT MUCH SAID ABOUT . BROKEN HEARTS NOW
Today we don’t hear so much about broken hearts. Not because hearts don’t break. They do. But we have found out that the really heroic person goes right on and functions in spite of a broken heart. And often functions better.
There used to be lots of sentimental writing about the broken heart. It was quite the style at one time for a girl to swoon away and slowly eat her heart out over a faithless lover. The cloak of sentimentality is falling from the broken heart that flaunts itself as such. Today we admire courage. And we give our admiration to those who can forget rather than remember what is Irrevocably gone. Nor do we admire the person who throws away an otherwise useful life because of disappointment. Probably the most constructive work that has been done in the way of art and service to others has been done by persons who had some great disappointment, some heartbreaking experience. The strong type of man or woman says: "If I cannot have love I will have ti e next best thing. I will amount to something. I will forget. I will direct this tremendous feeling into some other channel.” We of today have no use for the quitter, for the one who lacks courage to carry on. Her Heart Broken Dear Martha Lee: I was engaged and in love with a man of 29. I am 20. A few days before our wedding day. he eloped wit ha girl he, used to go with. That was a year ago. I have never ceased to love him. and my heart is just broken. I have tried to forget, but It seems I eannota. Os course, if he's happier with the other girl. I don't want him but if I don t get over my hurt soon. I will go crazy or commit suicide. What can I do? DESPERATE. I know a woman whose case is very simlar to yours. To heal her broken heart she does more things for crippled children than any other person I ever met. So far as she herself is concerned there is nothing life can give her now that would {compensate her for what tt took.
