Christian Church Starts to Erect New Structure Over Old Basement

The revival of-the building spirit, which is to result in a beautiful little brick church ready for use by Christmas, is co-inci-dent with the arrival of anew pastor, the Rev. E. Lester. St. Francis Hospital was started in 1908 when the Catholic order of the Sisters of St. Francis of the Poor of the Perpetual Adoration received permission to locate in Beech Grove. The mother hospital is the St. Elizabeth, in TJafayette, Ind. Five acres of ground were bought at Troy Ave. and Sherman Dr. The present building, with its capacity of 100 beds, was started in 1912. The corner stone was laid in 1913 and the hospital was dedicated in 1914. Speakers of the occasion were Mayor Joseph Bell, Governor Samuel Ralston and Bishop Chartrand of the Indianapolis diocese.

The ascent from the Union Station is so steep that the Big Four Railroad, which passes near, has to use a pusher engine to boost its freights up the hill.
