PAINT IS WORKER OF WONDERS IN HOME

Modern Housewives Today Find It Easy to Make New Things Out of Old With a Brush and a Bit of Gay Color. By Molly El'iott The magic of a can of paint and a nice new paint brush is a thing of strange and delightful charm when in the hands of a modern housewife. Old funiture that has long been relegated to the attic or cellar becomes a thing of beauty and joy to the neighbors; rooms that Jjave been only considered good enough for storage have been opened, painted and becurtained into inviting little guest rooms. Os course the trend toward the antique is responsible for the repainting habit. Not a family but what has been dragging out the old family heirlooms for renovation and setting them up with all pride either in their original finish or modernized with a little gray or green paint. If the wood be genuine and of good grain, of course, it is left with only a dull finish to enhance its loveliness. But if it be the contour of the design and not so good a piece of wood then beware of the flourishing paint brush! * , Woodwork, Too And not alone does the furniture I come under the brandishments of | enamel, but the woodwork itself is transformed into lovely colors to complete a color scheme. This results in somewhat of an Italian es- ! feet, for there is often a pale shade of gray, green used, and with that a faint line of corafcor blue in the paneling or molding. When done by an expert it is sometimes given a quaint mottled effect that softens the color and again gives the effect of the much desired antique. The guest room, therefore, may be made most attractive with a little paint and ingenuity and be freed from any appearance of makeshift. Odd pieces collected and handed down maj. be assembled for the guest room, a color scheme decided upon and the whole room, walls, furniture, draperies and floors blended Into t£e scheme. The usf of cretonne in old-fashioned chintz patterns is, of course, the most practical and picturesque. A clever use of cretonne is to remove the solid back of the head piece of an eajrly twentieth century wooden bed and in its place stretch behind the frame ' bright colored cretonne to match the over drapes and pillows about the room. The effect is charmingly quaint and attractive. Old Problem Solved The high head pieces of these unsightly old beds that nearly every one of us has hid away some where or worse, has been the bain of our lives for years, can be removed in this painting process. Or at least it can be lowered, the foot piece be removed and a quaint little squatty C >• Jonial bed results. A desk made from the funny litfle old-fashioned washstands makes a pretty piece of furniture for a painted bedroom. The lower drawers and little cubby hole cupboard are removed and only the upper drawer remains. Knobs to match those of | the dresser replace the ornate brass j handles that usually come on them and the desk is a part of the suite. It is great fun to make new things out of old. Especially when the old furniture has some sentimental appeal that makes us loathe to part : with it, as so often family pieces, though unsightly, do. Furniture shops are busy making over or revamping old pieces, they say, and j they do truly enjoy it, for after all, I old friends are dearest. SAVINGS FIRM WELL GUIDED Six Per Cent Dividends Paid for 33 Years. To have paid 6 per ceen dividends ;on savings for one year is an achievement of which many finacial I institutions are unable to boast. Con- ) sequently the thirty-three years that ! the Fletcher Avenue Savings and Loan Association has done this are | the most sincere kind of testimony to the business genius and effectiveness of its management. It has been said of the financier, | Morgan, that his one reason for I lending or declining to lend money | was the character of the person who j wished to borrow it. This rule is j equally applicable to banking instij tutions. Nothing is quite so important a | factor in their success as the moral I qualifications of the men who direct them. Over thirty years of careful j financial management is readily apj parent to any one visiting the offices i of the association at 10 E. Market St., but the real proof lies with Inj diana men and women who have i brought their financial problems i here for three decades.

Residence of William H. Bock

Few persons are able to think of all the uoss ble necessities of their home when planning to build. tßut such seems to have been true of the home of William H. Bock, 304 Buckingham Dr., just completed. The house is completeness itself In every detail, actually providing for an entire living apartment on the second floor, if the occasion should call for it. The unusual appearance of the outside design gives the house distinction achieved by the extremely peaked gables rising .on either side of the middle and forming thereby the roof for the porch. The gables provide two lovely alcPves in the two large rooms oil the 4 second floor. One of these is converted into a study, the other a large and airy guest, changer. A door in this room leads into a tiny room fitted for kitchenette, or for a sewing room or small reading room. A small bathroom with a shower instead of a bathtub, beautifully tiled and painted light blue above the molding completes the upstairs plan ekeept for a large storage room under the unfinished section of the gable roof. Extremely large closets In both these rooms and a small

HART BURNER USED CHEAP GRADE OF OIL Device Can Be Applied to Any Type of Heating Plant. Installing an oil burner becomes an easy matter when the qualifications of a Hart burner are brought into the pictu?e. A. H. Blank of the Vonnegut Hardware Company, in demonstrating the Hart burner, shows how indispensable these almost human mechanical devices have become. After installation, says Blank, the cost is about the same as coal, and no one has yet found any type of heating plant to which the Hart plant could not be applied with entire satisfaction. Cheap Fuel Used The fuel oil by the Hart burner is the ve,ry cheapest grade of oil, “the grade usually thrown down the sewer,” declares Blank. From a health standpoint this oil burner is an investment that cannot be overlooked, pointed out Blank. With as little inconvenience as it takes to set the thermostat, or heat regulator, in the living room, the regular warmth of your entire house is assured. No rising In a cold house in the middle of the night. No bringing the baby into a house I where the fire has gone out and I rooms become chilled. No Risks Left None of the health endangering i risks are left when a Hart burner has been hired to build, fire and regulate your furnace. A motor pumps the oil from a tank outside the house. The electric devise automatically turns the motor on and off and the ignition is worked automatically when the tank empties. Every unit of the entire plant must work in unison or no part of it works at all. AMERICA CONDEMNED India is Better, Native Tells Bible Club at Y. M. C. A. America car.not rightfully claim to be a Christian nation, declared A. J. Sampson, a native of India, in an address Wednesday night before the Bible Investigation club at the Y. M. C. A. Sampson, said the second largest business in America is crime, “In my own country you rarely hear of murders, but in this country t is common practice.” he said.

shade of blue and ivory and a gay chintz blind in the window over the breakfast table makes it most inviting. On the other side of the dining room is a small hallway which leads Into a large nursery, the bathroom and the master’s chamber. Each of these rooms is equipped with large double closets with partitions between and in the hallway is a large closet for linens. The front bedroom closet has two doors one of which opens into the living room, providing a coat closet and wardrobe for the bedroom. Another small coat closet is provided at one side of the entrance into the dining room. Big Fireplace The living room is long and hospitable with a great wood fireplace in one end and windows in two sides providing a quantity of light and air. The wide front porch extends across the entire front of the house but is sheltered only partially. At one end wide steps lead to the cinder driveway which winds around behind the house and into a double garage in the rear.
