Structure Represents High Standards of Organization —Dignity and Stateliness Noted in Exterior —Built of Bedford Stone. ]><M.uty, coinfort and practicality have been blended into harmony in the new home of the Colu r nbia Club. Inside and out, the budding is the result of a combined effort to make ft truly representative of the high standards of the club. The first impression, from the outside, is one of dignity and stateliness, in the ten-story structure of Gothic architecture. The Redford oolitic stone of which the building is made came fiora quarries at Bloomington, Ind. The arched entrance with wrought iron lanterns on either side, is at the right. Starting just above the first f.cor, and extending to the tenth floor, is-an oriel, ending in a parapet. The copper of the mansard roof is treated to make it verde green. I>ign!ty Preserved Inside, the and lounge carry out the same note of dignity, but add to it one of warmth and cordiality. The long lQbby, with paneling of satin-finished walnut and large wrought iron lanterns, serves as an introduction to the lounge, just off it, which extends two stories, with a mezzanine around three sides. To the right of the lobby are the elevators and a curved marble staircase with wrought iron balustrade in antique gold and black. Behind the elevators are the offices, check room, general wash room, and service bar. The lounge, too bas_ the dark paneling, more massive than in the lobby, and larger wrought iron lanterns. At the front, beneath the mezzanine and along the vestibule is a row of small stained glass windows. The predominating feature of the lounge is the huge fireplace at the back, with a travertine marble extending to the celling. Before the fireplace is a fender rail of hard walnut upholstered in antique leather, and two large davenports. At the other end of the lounge is a large oval table with marble top. Lounging chairs stered in linen frieze, and small chairs upholstered in 'English leather, are.used. Several high back pilaster- chairs and a number of valuable art objects add interest. Red Velvet Flangings The hangings are of red velvet with heavy fringe. In the lounge and lobby the marble floor Is covered ,vith heavy Austrian tuft rugs of a special Gothic design. - The billiard room, just behind the lounge, is furnished in walnut, with upholstering of heavy mohair green velvet. and pool tables. The grill room at the end of the billiard room is in old oak. The basement houses the barber shop, Turkish baths and plunge, lockers, laundry, ice machinery and other equipment. The mezzanine, overlooking the Jounge room from three sides, is made inviting with groupings of varied pieces of furniture. On the mezzanine floor, the library, a long, low room, is finished in rich browns anj umber tones on rouch texture walls, With walnut wainscoting and bookcases. Furniture is of early English type. The principal women’s rest room, on this floor, is finished in the spirit of the Directoire, with carpets and hangings of green, rose and gold. Much of the furniture of walnut and mahogany, inlaid and decorated, was imported. Two ('ard rooms Two cardrooms, one in gray Ivory and the other in pastel green, and the steward’s quarters also are on this floor. On the third floor is the main dining room, whiclj. with the women’s dining room behind it, can seat 600 persons. The main dining room and the foyer have a marble floor. The architecture is early Venetian. High terracotta arches of gray green are finished with friezes of Norse sailing scenes. . hangings are of rich blue damask with tracery in gold. Crystal lamps with rose shades complete the furnishings. The women’s rest room on this floor is in soft French gray with panel moulds ami ivory woodwork. The main kitchen, furnished with white enamel and modern throughout, Is on this floor, and there la one private dining room. I*rivat Dining Room Six private dining rooms, one of which can be divided into three small rooms, are on the fourth floor They aro finished in warm ivory with paiel moulds in cream, and are fitted with furniture of varying designs. On the otLer side of the building, this floor houses the tailor shop, linen room and showers, lockers and a dining room, with steam table, for the employes. The fifth to ninth floors are given over to the 130 living apartments. There is one two-room suite on each floor. The remainder of the rooms are single rooms with baths. Eighty of these rooms have connecting doors providing for additional two-room suites. Each room has a telephone. The furniture in these rooms is of walnut. The finishing Is in warm gray. The large ballroom, which may be used as a banquet room, on the top floor, is finished with colored washes of variegated grays and lavenders, with hand-painted floral garlands and festoons. At the back is a small stage. The foyer to the ballroom is In Travertine coloring, with- Walnut woodwork. A service kitchen adjoins the ballroom. Many precautions have been taken .against fire in the building. On each floor is a fire extinguisher and a hose. .
