Average price of twenty Industrial stocks for Saturday, Aug. 8, was 137.40, up 1.69. Average price of twenty rails for Saturday, Aug. 8. was 100.63, up .80. ftp T'nitrd Press NEW YORK, Aug. B.—Despite the absences on the street, which have become common on Saturday, the market registered a heavy volume of trading in most departments with commission and wire houses working to the limit. Many important firms joined the ranks ofthe bears and at least one leading wire house sounded a strong note of warning concerning mounting prices and increasing bank loans. ~ Motor shares were more or less conspicuous by their absence and oil shares were not prominent, but • equipments, electric rails and other specialties were making up for any tardiness on the part of these groups. Coppers were firm but quiet and' Jflfcgars were doing little, although recent star performer—South Porto Rico—sold at 87 and has maintained most of its advance. U. 8. Steel got into high ground earlq, selling at 123^4- This was a signal for most of the high-priced performers to again kick over, the traces and work to new highs at an accelerated pace. Local Bank Clearings Indianapolis bank clearings for Saturday, Auer. 8. amounted to $2,848,000. Bank debits for Saturday. Aug:. 8. were $5,770,000. TRADE REVIEWS SAY
species of lumber, both softBhl and hardwood, have materially Njßproved their position within the lKst few weeks, and prices in general trend toward greater strength, says the American Lumberman, Chicago. Retail softwood stocks are low, as yards have been doing a good trade and have been conservative buyers. And as most American cities and towns are taking out many more building permits than last year, while price returns from crops are sure to result in heavy fall consumption on the farms as harvests are completed, lumber requirements will have to be met largely by orders bn the mills. Plants producing the major softwood species, southern pine and Douglas fir, have been forced to curtail production because of the low level of prices that prevailed in the first part of this year. But the principal mills cutting all species of softwoods and producing 40 per cent of the national total during the first thirty weeks of the year had shipped a full 100 per cent of their production. Prices are therefore taking on new firmness, and many items have advanced, but returns are not yet such as to make manufacture attractive to owners of stumpage. So decidedly upward, however, is the price trend that buyers have been attempting to place orders at present market levels for future delivery, but the mills have refused to accept them. GRAIN FUTURES ARE IRREGULAR Wheat Corner Probe Causes Caution. Bu Unitrd rresn CHICAGO. Aug. B.—Grain futures closed irregular and within fractional distance from opening figures on the Chicago Board of Trade today. Shadows of an impending investigation into alleged existence of a corner caused traders in wheat to resume a cautious attitude. Wheat holders stepped out on the buying side at the opening dip and pushed prices upward to new high ground on the movement. At the top, wary traders sought profits and prices reacted. Early buying was based on unfavorable crop news from the spring wheat. Corn futures met general selling, based primarily on the better weather there over southwestern producing areas. Oats trade was dull. Price trend reflected action in other grains. Proivisions were higher. Chicago Grain Table —Aug. 8— WHEAT— . PrevOpen. High. Low. Close. .•'.one.
