INDUSTRIES GENERALLY IMPROVING First Half of Year Marked by Large Financial Transactions. Three notable facts illumine the business situation ok the second half of the year gets under way. says the Fletcher-American National Bank In Its August number of Trade Trends. One of these Is the fact that extraordinary activities prevailed in a surprising number of important lines during the first six months. The second is that for even the most depressed industrial the lowest ebb of the summer i?action is well above that for 1924. The third notable fact is found in the present improving tone of business sentiment. Records Complete With the completion of records for the first half of the year, it is clear that the period was marked by large Industrial outputs, stupendous financial transactions, exceptional purchasing power and great consumption of goods. Demand, although upon a piecemeal basis was without parallel In some lines. The result is shat surplus stocks of commodities are moderate. In some Instance they are reported as meager. Excessive productive capacities in a number of lines, such as iron and steel and soft coal, led to reduced operations. Throughout nearly all industry, capacities are ample, and keen competition has persisted an(V still persist among sellers. Recently, however, average price declines have been checked, and buvers x are displaying more confidence in current levels. Purchases for future delivery are appearing a little more freely. New Records Made A glance over the statistical picture of the first six months of 1925 discloses the fact that new high records were attained in the production of automobiles, silk, cement, cigarettes, lumber, gasoline and tires; in building construction, in freight car movements, and in life Insurance sales. Bank clearings reached anew high record for the period, gaining 15 per cent over the first six months of 1924. Stock exchange transactions of 204.907,139 shares compared with 175,798.000 shares in the first half of 1924. Freight movements were 5 per cent ahead of the first half of 1924 and 1.2 per cent above the total for the corresponding period of 1923. the previous record. Steel ingot output was the largest In all history, with the exception of one half year in each of these years: 1923, 1918 and 1917.
