FRIENDLY WAY BEST, SAYS TRAFFIC CHIEF Lieut. Lewis Johnson Finds Polly-Anna Manner of Benefit When Handling Tough Jobs at Crossings.

By Ross H. Garrigus Polly-Anna stuff pays a traffic cop. Indianapolis police will testify to this, according to Lieut. Lewis Johnson, traffic chief, in the absence of Inspector Michael Glenn, who is touring the “ould country.” In Detroit, Mich., there was a cop Who gloried in being hard-boiled. Then the Polly-Anna bug worked on him and he lost his grouch. He soon became ‘‘Bill” to motorists, with a result that when Christmas rolled around the cop had to hire a truck to tote home all his presents.

I told that story to Lieutenant Johnson. “Huh," said he. ‘‘That's rothing. There’s one traffic cop in Indianapolis who used to average {3OO in gifts every Christmas, all because he was so friendly. “Polly-Anna stuff certainl pays. hands out like a scarecrow. WeT, I got along fine the first night and the second. But thp next — “The streets were • slippery and two cars came together. While I was getting item untangled, traffic began to pile up on me. They began to give me the horn. Now when you’re doing the best and the drivers start to mzz you, It's enough to make anyone lose his temper. I decided right then and there to bawl out every driver personally. As each one passed, I yelled mean remarks. Well pretty soop, another officer comes up and said: “Johnson you’re wanted at headquarters. I’ll relieve you.” “Sam Perrott was chief then. Sam says: ‘What’s about you saying a lot of harsh stuff to all the auto drivers.’ And I explained. Stays Inside ‘Well you stay inside. You’re a heck of a traffic man,” said Sam. So I lost my chance. “Traffic cops have a lot to try their patience* That’sone reason we don’t allow them to stay on I

Your traffic is slowed because you have a three way sign. Then New York St., is a police and fire street. When an alarm sounds, you have to hold for the salvage corps and watch for the police emergency if It's a downtown fire. And meanwhile your traffic is backing up clear to Ohio St. It’s a tough place. The traffic Isn’t educated like it is on Washington St. Cn Washington, drivers obet the signal better.” „ I remarked that it must be nice to be a cop and drive at will through traffic signs. “Ycu’re all wrong,” he said. ‘‘A traffic cop will raise more hullabalbo because one policeman snubs his sign than fifteen pedestrians. The only time fellow policemen can drive through the sign is when they’re on an emergency call. The emergency on its way back obeys the traffic rules, unless It Is on the way to the
