SIGN COMPANY LOSEN IN TILT Park Board Bars School ‘Ad.’ Park board members out-maneu-vered the Thomas Cusack Company Thursday when it was discovered that the sketch of a sign to be erected on the site of the new Shortridge High School building bore the words, "Property of Thomas Cusack Company." The board refused to permit erection of the sign. Had the permit been jdlowed within seventy feet of the street, it would‘have established a precedent that would have handicapped materially efforts of the board to remove all Cusack signs now located within 100 feet on parks and boulevards, it was said. The board was on the verge of adopting the resolution granting the school board authority to build the sign, when Frank P. Manley, board member, halted proceedings and drew attention to the connection of the Cusack Company with the project. Board members have declared warfare against the company because its official* have refused to obey the board’* otjder to remove their signs on parka and boulevards. H,CKEY TO BE HEARD WIH Address G. What is New On the Stage
By Walter D. Hickman The Metropolitan FTvo are attempting the problem of doing bits of opera in English. These singers have more of the concert stage way to them than vaudeville, but audiences are becoming more and more to welcome operatic music in English. Coulter and Rose are two blackface comedians who work up an interesting routine before they finish. They are using an introduction which starts them off to a laugh. It seems that the harmonica is becoming a rival of the uke. This team has a good harmonica player. A real estate agent from California must have written “Behave Yourself” which is presented by Jerome Merrick and company. Tells the story of how a lawyer prevented a client from getting a divorce. An average sketch. . Murray and Charlotte offer travesty upon juggling, magic and the like. A bicycling act with certain features opens the show. The movie is "The Hunted Woman.” At the Palace today and Saturday. • * • Local theaters today offer: "The Easy Mark” at English’s; Wyeth and Wynn at the Lyric; William Desmond in "The Meddler” at the Isis; "The Lady Who Lied” at the Circle; "Confessions of a Queen” at the Apollo; “Lost —A Wife” at the Ohio and “White Fangs" at ; the Colonial. • • • NEGRO MUSICIANS APPEAR IN CONCERT The two oustanding artists who appeared Thursday night at Caleb Mills Hall on a program given by negro musicians attending the seventh annual convention of the Negro Musicians, were Lucretia L. Mitchell, soprano o.} Indianapolis and Carl R Diton of Philadelphia. Dlton as an accompanist, revealed by his work last night, is a rare artist. H.'s handling of “Swing Low
Sweet Chariot.” a negro spiritual, for Miss Mitchell was masterful. Thl3 man brings a wonderful sympathetic beauty to his work at the piano. From a technical standpoint he is a master. In Lucretia L. Mitchell, it seems to be that the colored race has one of his great musicial leaders of the future. Her voice and technique shows the results of expert training and study. She made the spirituals a symphony of tonal appeal. A rare artist. T. Theo. Taylor, pianist, of Chicago; the campaign quartet of Hampton Institute; Clarence Cameron White violinist, and R. Nathaniel Dett, well-known pianist and composer, were on the program.
