KITCHEN CAN BE MADE ONE OF MOST ATTRACTIVE OF ROOMS
Wise Home Builder Will Give Attention to Have Housewife’s Workshop Beautiful, and Easily Cleaned as Well. By Molly Elliott In the rieys when almost every family had a “hired girl,” the necessity of planning an attractive kitchen was not so much appreciated ; r almost any room around the house that was too poorly located for other use iVas considered good enough for the kitchen. Now, however, when the mistress of the house frequently does her own work, the kitchen must be an attractive workshop, and the wise home builder will give it much thought. First, of course, comes the matter of wall and floor finishes. The cheapest In first cost is a washable paper or an oilcloth in cream, blue or white. Both of these make attractive wall finishes. Use Light Enamel For real durability, however, the gitchen walls should be finished in some light enamel with a glazed surface that may be washed. This enamel need not be White —in fact, the present tendency is toward some light color. Cream or a light buff makes an attractive finish for the north kitchen, as it lends an effect of artificial sunlight when the real sunlight is absent. With walls of this color, ivory woodwork is harmonious, while with very ligljt gray walls, which ax-e satisfactory in a south or West kitchen, the woodwork may be a feomewhat deeper shade of gray. One attractive east kitchen showed cream-enameled walls combined with ivory woorvvork, with a baseboard and vnndaw sills flmshed in walnut brown —a combination both harmonious and practical. In West Kitchen A charming west kitchen in a house where green was a favored shade was finished with walls enamelled in a delicate “apple" green and woodwork of a very deep cream shade, while robin’s egg blue and Ivory Is still the choice of mana housewives. I All of these combinations and many more may be had in enamel, but if one wishes to spend more on the kitchen w r all and and desires an absolutely washable surface the glazed white tiles, extending two thirds of the way to the ceiling, are excellent. Color may be given the room by using a pastel-toned enamel above the rile, and the linoleum used on the floor frequently furnishes contrast to the walls. In one kitchen in which the tile and enamel was all white, the inlaid linoleum was an ivory and black block pattern, and the curtains, of white marquisette, were edged with a ruffle of black and white checked gingham. Blue and white Is often combined, with curtains of blue and white checked gingham, and occasionally gray and white, though this combination calls for some warm color in the kitchen curtains. Linoleum on Floors Inliad linoleum is the favored floor covering, though tile is sometimes used in expensive houses. This material, while easily cleaned and ex ceedingly durable, is more tiring to the feet than linoleum. The arrangement of windows in the kitchen is a matter of importance, for one should have the greatest amount of light where most of the work is done. Since the sink is used both in preparing the meal and cleaning up, the larger windows are usually placed above It. Sinks are no longer at a backbreaking height, but are raised so that one may stand erect to work, and this necessitates the windows being someewhat above ordinary height, but they should not be so high that the view from them may not be readily enjoyed, for an attractive view from the kitchen window takes away half the monotohy of the daily dishwashing.
CHANGE IN FIXTURES RELIEVES MONOTONY
It is the need of a changj that makes the office worker look forward eagerly to a vacation and tjie housewives regret the necessity of remaining in the same house fiftytwo weeks out of the year. Not everyone can enjoy a vacation, but there are few who could not indulge themselves in a change of scenery around the house. It Is the monotony bf looking at the same old pictures, the same ornaments, the same lamps year after year that makes one v-tph to leave home, even to sp!nd two weeks In some mosquito-infected summer camp, but why not this year cheat the hungry insects and instead of roughing it for two weeks away from home, change the home by

“The Florida fever may have struck lot of Indianapolis folks, but I’m not one of them,” Frank F Woolling, real estate man with? offices at 510 Continental Bank Bldg., declared. “I have confidence in the future of Indianapolis and believe firmly in the solidity of Indianapolis investment, and belause I do, I’m finishing thirty more baby grand apartments to rent to small families who appreciate a real home at a very reasonable rental.” Woolling’s "baby grand apartments” which he has built in the neighborhood l of Brookside Park have attracted national attention by their high quality of workmanship and their compact, convenient arrangement. Bight months ago he started construction on the first of a group of twenty-six small apartments —thirteen double houses. These were semi-modern and much smaller In scale than the apartments he is now building, but so complete and convenient that they were rented long before they were completed. Out of these, the idea for the forty completely apartments grew, and construction will soon be completed on thirty of them. Already ten are rented. The new apartments have everything to make a home complete, from dainty marquisette curtains at yie windows to a garage for the flivver, and the rent is only $32, a
SUMMER GOOD TIME TO HAVE FURNACE FIXED Charles Goldstein Says Work Receives More Care. Whoever it was who said, "In time of peace prepare for w&r” undoubtedly was one who neglected to have his furnace put In good repair during- the summer. Charles Goldstein frequently meets persons of this type. “If people would only realize,” Goldstein said, “how much better it Is to have necessary furnace repairs made during warm i weather, there would be v49ry few hurry-up calls for the repair man when the thermometer is shivering at zero. In the summer months my workmen do not have to hurry, as is the case during the usual rush in the winter, and accordingly whatever they may be called upon to do, they do more thoroughly. ‘‘Moreover, it is at this season of the year to carefully plan the proper repair to make. Later on, when cold weather and emergencies com© together, there is very little time for planning, and often the workmen can do nothing but make a temporary job at an actual labor' cost cf more than a wellplanned permanent repair done at the proper season.” Goldstein, whose sheet metal plant Is located s.t 1040 Meridian St. also makes a specialty of installing and Repairing all types of guttering and spouting. “Anew section of guttering put up in place of orite that has rotted Vill very often prolong the life of the entire guttering system by relieving the tendency to decay caused by water standflrig in a sagging joint,” Goldstein said. "At any rate, my customers are frequently surprised by the moderate cost of such repairs, and you know it costs nothing to have me estimate,”
some nevy touch of beauty and remain to enjoy it? There are hundreds of lovely things that may be bought for the home at Lyman Brothers, 223-225 E. Ohio St. In the picture display are exquisite landscapes more beautiful than any to be found within hundreds of miles of home. There are copies, beautifully executed, of world famous paintings. There/are still-life groups—gay flowers holding the beauty that one may glimpse, for only a few hours in nature. Tapestry panels in which quaint figures are woven are attractive offerings for the living room, bringing with them atmosphere of old world charm, and dainty pastels for the bedrooms make waking a pleasure.

little more than half what one would pay for an apartment with such conveniences. The locatiafri is ideal, for all of the apartments under construotion are in the 2000 block on Parker Ave., within a block of the Brookside car line and within two blocks of the north side of Brookside Park. While the park adds to the beauty pj. the location, however, the houses themselves are most attractive, for tenants have planted flowers, cared for the lawns and shrubbery and made charming homes In these "house-apartments.” Each apartment is tile roofed and finlsed in a distinctive and harmonious tone of silver gray, but In no two houses have Freeman and White, painting contractors, used the same color combination. The walls are papered in an excellent grade of stippled paper, with antique gold lighting fixtures and many floor and wall sockets to permit the use of low lights. Shades, ruffled marquisette curtains and drapery rods are at every window, and inlaid linoleum and an enamelled builtin cabinet in the kitchen subtract from the gurnishing cost. There are two closets in the kitchen and a large one in the bedroom, as well opening from this room. The ornamental bit of furniture that looks l.ke a phonograph in the living room proves to be a Heatrola, an economical and most satisfactory substitute for the furnace “In these apartments I have tried to give my tenants all the conveniences of a downtown apartment with the freedom one enjoys in being away from the congested district,” Woolling said. The rent is low enough so that one can save money Instead of having to spend it all on the necessities of shelter, food and clothing. The living room, bedroom, dining alcove and kitchen require little furniture and the houses are built and finished in such a way that any one would be proud to call them ‘home.’ ** Inquiries regarding rental of a “baby grand” may be made at Woolling’s office or at the construction office, 2005 Parker Ave. Estate Heatrolas were furnished by L. PAINTING WORK BEING DONE ON PAYMENT PLAN Northern Company Offers Attractive Proposition to Home Owner. When Henry Ford started selling automobiles on the partial payment plan, wise merchants and artisans saw the handwriting on the wall. Nowdays there Is a general realization that the necessary charge for some forms of labor imposes a burden on the property owner that can only be lightened by allowing him to spread his outlay over a period of time. One such expense is that cf painting. There is nothing about a building more important that the proper application of paint, to make it resist the ravages of time and weather. Many Decide to Walt Yet many a home-owner hesitates and decides to “wait until next year” before he has his house painted because he feels that he is unable to spare the actual cash. The Northern Paint Company, which, beside furnishing the necessary skilled labor, keeps a first qlass stock of Advance paints, oils, stains and varnishes at 2943 Central Ave. has made a specialty of doing excellent work on payments. Give Eight Montlis The usual practice is to allow any customer who desires the privilege of paying his bill ih eight monthly installments. Very often, when a house is really In need of painting, eight months may represent the difference between beauty and safety from decay, or hideous unattractiveness and the beginning of a deterioration. With advertisers cons tan tly preaching the paramount importance of saving the surface of residence buildings, it is no wonder that so many home owners have availed themselves of this very excellent and convenient plan of having their painting done as soon as it is needed.
