TELEGRAM FROM ‘BROTHER’ STAYS SCOTT HANGING Reprieve Granted on Basis of Mystery Message Sent at Detroit. Bu United Press CHICAGO, July 17.—Real drama, rivaling the synthetic stage product, was enacted here early today when Russell Scott, composing himself to die on the gallows at sunrise, received a reprieve of one week. Scott had abandoned all hope; he had made a tearful parting with his wife and his aged father; he had made a last statement denying he had anything to do with the killing of Joseph Maurer, young drug clerk, and he was preparing to meet his doom, some five hours off, when the electrifying news of the reprieve reached him. A telegram from Detroit signed Robert Scott, brother of Russell, accepting the blame for the murder and promising to surrender, reached Springfield near midnight The tele- • gram read: Message May Be Hoax “Delay the hanging of my brother, Russell Scott, I will be in to surrender myself. I am the man who shot Joseph Maurer.” Governor Len Small, located by Will Colvin, head of the board of pardons and paroles, extended a week’s clemency to make sure there was no miscarriage of justice. In some quarters it is believed the telegram was sent by friends of Russell in a last desperate effort to gain another stay of execution. While Small was being sought by Colvin, Detroit police checked up on the telegraph office there. A young man stopped a messenger boy on the street, gave him the message and some money and disappeared, the investigation revealed. Scott Stunned by News Scott wts undressing, preparing to take his last sleep before hanging, when word of the reprieve was brought to him. “Thank God!” burst from his lips. Stunned by the news, he then stood speechless for a moment. His head fell forward. His lips quivered. “I'd lost hope,” he said, "I , was ready to die. I had given up hope. Poor Robert. Some how I knew down in my heart that he would come, but whether he would arrive in time was the question.” Then Russell asked that his wife and father be notified immediately. Mrs. Scott was at the home of a friend, exhausted from her long fight to save Russell, and hopeless. She burst into tears and offered up a prayer of thanksgiving. v Father Shouts Glee The eider Scott, at the same house, cried and laughed and almost shouted with glee. “What did I tell you?” he

shouted. “Didn’t I say that Robert would never let his brother hang? That message is from him. And right now I’m going to start my fight to save Robert.” To the old man Russell’s reprieve is only a momentary victory. If Robert appears he will have to start another fight for life all over again. But he feels that Robert will be spared the gallows. “After making the sacrifice—of offering his own life to save his brother—a jury or judge would not hang him,” the aged man said. The reprieve arrived at the jail at 8 a. m., accompanied by a note ft*m Small explaining-- his action was taken on advice of the board of pardons and paroles. Scott went back to bed at 6 a. m., and asked Warden Westbrook to be permitted to sleep undisturbed.

before the first wave cleared the trench. • That’s the spirit'd police on the bank bandit detail, according to Capt. Roy A. Pope, who directs their activities, or rather, “their inactivities," he commented bitterly. Some of Best “The policemen we choose to guard the banks comprise some of the best men of the force,” Pope said today. "They’ve been on the job mare than a month and are chafing at the bit for action. Say, it’s a lot harder to loaf than to work and the fellows, I believe, would vote a brass medal to a bandit who would provide them with some excitement. “They're still on the alert, however,” Pope said. "When I inspected a few days ago, the guards care-

fully scrutinized me with their shot guns ready for action, as I entered the bank^.” May Be Removed Those in touch with the situation believe the bank bandit detail will be removed quietly one of these days, if the calm continues. It is said the bankers soon will be ready to protect their own property. Pope's high hopes of action for himself and his squads have been dashed, but Mayor Shank’s prophecy that there will be no more bank hold-ups in Indianapolis during the remainder of his administration is
