POP STANDS ON OITY PROPERTY DRAW PROTEST Mr. Fixit Receives Other Letters From Times Readers. Let Mr. Fixit solve your problem with city officials. He is The Times representative at the city hall. Write him at The Times. Pop stands on ' city property are the latest target for missiles from Times readers, Mr. Fixit’s mail reveals. DEAR MR. FIXIT: Pop stands on city property without paying any rent or tax! Everywhere you go you see unsightly stands on parking strips. Merchants, who pay rent and licenses are not allowed to display any merchandise on sidewalks. There is an ordinance prohibiting these stands on parking strips. Where are the police? A LEGITIMATE MERCHANT. Captain Fletcher told Mr. Fixit he wduld issue orders at police roll call to men on district runs to watch for violations of this ordinance. The law declares that merchants may display counters on the sidewalk not more than three feet from the building line. DEAR MR. FIXIT: At the corner of Hamilton Ave. and St. Clair St., there is a -very large hole (in St. Clair) reaching almost across the width of the street, which makes it very bacl getting across in machines at any time and in bad -weather it is worse. I wonder if you would kindly have a load of dirt or cinders thrown along there to make it more convenient. Anything you can do I assure you will be appreciated not only by myself but. all property owners along here. Thanking you kindly for whatever you can do for us. A PROPERTY OWNER. Thomas Newsom, assistant street commissioner, will come to

your assistance within the next few days, he promised Mr. Fixit. DEAR MR. FIXIT: A small alley between W. Court St. and W. Market St. is in a filthy condition. Two large iron tanks, with everything to be thought of is thrown into them are there, and when it rains the smell is unbearable. Little children play in the dirty water. Also, the ground is filled with rusty cans, bottles and other trash. Health of. fleers have i called several times and promised to have the alley cleaned out, but there has never been anything done. The longer it stands the .worse it ©ets. NEIGHBORS. The board' of health promised to investigate. Let Mr. Fixit know if you fail to obtain results. CANADIAN CITY IS FREED FROM DETROIT THUGS No Bank Robbery Since 1920, Reports Chief Constable. Windsor. Canada, just acorss the river from Detroit, Mich., which is blessed with such full-grown crime wave that the chief of police is suffering from nervous breakdown, hasn't had a bank robbery or payroll stick-up since 1920. Murders are rare, too. This pleasing situation was reported by Daniel Thompson, chief constable of the city, which has a population of 85,000. Thompson is here for the thirty-second annual convention of the InternaJbnal Association of Police Chiefs. “I explain our comparative free-

dom from crime by the fact that our judges are appointed for life,” he said. ‘‘Also, to the fact that politics are absolutely unknown in Canadian polioe departments. The chief hires and fires, and expects every maji to do hio duty. More, he sees every man does his duty. “In 1920 I took charge of the Windsor department. We had been terrorized by armed bands of Detroit thugs. I called in the men. and told them to stop it or turn in their uniforms. Tn six months they stopped it. Some t venty thugs were caught redhanded by my men, who were armed with sawed-off shot guhs, and they are now serving ten to twenty year sentences in the Ontario prison. It takes anywhere from ten minutes to half an hour to get a jury impanelled in murder case3, Thompson said. Norway is now next to the United States as the greatest aluminum producing country in the world.

QUADRUPLETS READY Four Children Will Be at State Fair Baby Show. John, Jean. Jane and June Stephenson, the four-months-old quadruplets of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Stephenson of Sheridan, Ind., intend to be right there when the baby show opens during State Fair week. When the babies were born they weighed three pounds apiece, but now they weigh seven or eight. Mrs. Stephenson attributes the gain to the buttermilk and syrup which she feeds them. “How do you tell them apart?” Mrs. Stephenson was asked. “I them tagged.” LEAP SAVES LIFE 811 United PretiK ELKHART, Ind., July 15.—Leaping from his auto as it was struck and demolished by a fast train on the New York Central Railroad.
