EVOLUTION IS DEFENDED BY OHIO MINISTER B. Y. P. U. Visitor Gives Views on Scopes Trial. ‘The Scopes evolution trial at Dayton, Tenn., is an attempt of a group of people to destroy progress,” today declared the Rev. Clarence A. Mitchell, Cincinnati, Ohio, pastor, who is a delegate to the International B. Y. P. U. convention here. “Its aim is to cripple the methods of investigation and the result is stagnation. If we stop the unfolding of truth, creative thinking will ceasee, and deterioratiion will set in,” he said. "The public school is a place for seeking out new truths. Pursuing of scientific methods to find new laws of life adds to our knowledge of life. Knowledge is a great asset if used to develop the Christian life. “Therefore, new truths enlarge life and give new r hope that the future has much for us. Our Master put us here to discover truth. Truth will help the church to get its bearing.” he said. The Rev. Mark F. Sanborn of Lie- I
Acid Stomach “Phillips Milk of 1 lagnesia” Better than Soda
Hereafter, instead of soda take a little “Phillips Milk of Magnesia” in water any time for indigestion or sour, acid, gassy stomach, and relief will come instantly. For fifty years genuine “Phillips Milk of Magnesia” hafe been prescribed by physicians because it overcomes three times as much acid in the stomach as a saturated solution of bicarbonate of soda, leaving the stomach sweet and free from all gases. It neutralizes acid fermentations in the bowels and gently urges the souring waste from the system without purging. Besides, it is more pleasant td take than soda. Insist upon “Phillips.” Twenty-five cent bottles, any drugstore.—Advertisement.

FURNITURE OFF TO LOW LEVEL Prices Drop to Near PreWar Quotations.* Times Washington Bureau. 1322 Sew York Avenue. WASHINGTON, July 10. —Marked shrinkage in furniture prices was revealed in a report of the Department of Labor, showing a precipitate drop of 42 per cent from high war time levels. Prices are 45 per cent above 1913 levels. Increased wage schedules are held responsible for the remaining bulge. Two hundred and fifty dollars worth of furniture during the war, now can be purchased for $145. Furniture prices, comparatively, are lower than rents, clothes, foods and most other commodities, the report shows. MONKEY TRIAL VIEWS GIVEN (Continued From Page 1) advanced students only, and under competent instructors, and is not for the intermediates, or superficial in the educational mill.” THE ik TEX. JOHN L. PRENTICE, Sutherland Presbyterian Church: “I think this trial is foolishness. Those who believe in the evolutionary theory are claiming it is a theory: they are not claiming it as a fact. Some day It may be proved a fact. If it is, the Christian people should be the first to accept the truth. If it is not truth, that will be proved, and Christian people should reject It. We don’t feel today, when we say the earth is round, tlu.t It is a religious matter; yet men once were persecuted fer , saying it is round. “I think a great deal of Mr. Bryan. I believe he is sincere; but even great men some times are; wrong. If he feels that the theory j of evolution is w'rong, then the only thing for him to do is to fight it.” | ... SHE REV. W. W. BOLLINGER, Edwin Ray M. E. Church: “There is an old saying, “It is an ill wind that Mows nobody good.” The trial at Dayton will cause more reading of the Bible. More people will

seek to know what the first chapter of Genesis really teaches. The issues in evolution will be more clearly defined. People will not talk so much about general evolution, but will speak in more specific terms. The scientists will be forced to define evolution in a more definite and positive manner. “Theological controversies have always been in evidence since the Bible was w'ritten. The so-called modernists and fundamentalists may fade away in their interpretation of the Bible, but the fundamental gospel for tfle needs of a modern world will remain just the same. “A trial in the little town of Dayton will not do away with the Christ who is able to meet the needs of every age. What we need is freedom of thinking, but with reverence.” LADDER FOUND IN SEWER HOLE Whether Indianapolis criminals, like the apaches of Paris, utilize sew'ers for a quick get away from the police is the quef don aroused in the minds of empioves of the street commissioner's department.
