WOMEN AMONG HEAVIEST RAIL STOCKHOLDERS Pennsylvania Railroad Is Owned by 146,797 Investors. Records of stock ownership just compiled by the Pennsylvania Railroad show that the number of people who have invested in the cdmpany are today three times as many as there were fifteen years ago, according to local Pennsy officials. During the fifteen-year period covered by this analysis the spread of ownership of the company’s stock has been particularly marked among women investors. They have increased not only in actual number, but also in the proportion of their holdings to the total amount of stock outstanding, which for the greater part of this period has remained ths same, 9,985,314 shares. In the last five years alone,* the number of Pennsylvania Railroad investors has increased about 30,000. In other words, during the period of the railroad’s recovery from war operating conditions, distribution of ownership in the stock has increased approximately 25 cent. At the present time the number of Pennsylvania Railroad ' stockholders, 146,797, is the largest in the company’s history. The average holding today is 68.02 shares as against 136.81 shares 15 years ago Employees Buy On January 1, 1910, the number of women stockholders was 28,333 They owned 25.95 per cent of the total stock, and constituted 48.28 pei cent of the total number of stock holders. On January 1, 1925, thej numbered 70,803, an increase of 15: per cent. While they still constitute about the sqjne percentage of al' stockholders, they now own 32.63 per cent of the total stock outstanding. The stockholding list includes all ranks from the successful busi nes man and the large institutions t( day laborers and mechanics. A not able Increase in the list is from al ranks of officers and employes ii the Pennsylvania Railroad service. A study of the figures as far back as 1910 indicates a steady trend toward more widespread ownership in actual number, as well as in territorial location. On January 1. 1910, the number of stockholders in States outside of New York, Pennsylvania and New England, was 9,073. They owned at that time 9.24 per cent of the total outstanding stock and represented 15.47 per cent of the total number of stockholders. On January 1, 1925, this number had been increased to 28.028 individuals holding 15.49 per cent of the total stock and constituting 19.31 per cent of the total number of stockholders. Six Per Cent Return While the Pennsylvania Railroad System extends into thirteen States and the District of Columbia, its domicile is the State of Pennsylvania, and it is interesting note, that of the whole number of stockholders, 55.98 per cent are credited to that State. Figures i~ ve also been compiled giving the tota' dividends paid to stockholders since the Pennsylvania Railroad was chartered in 1846. In every calendar year since the company hegan co operate, cash dividends have been paid to those who provider! out of their savings the money with w r hich to build and equip the road, averaging for the entire period 6 per cent per year, and amounting to more than , threequarters of a billion dollars. FLYING FISH IS FARE Stetuner Crew Undergoes Many Hardships. Bv Times Special LONDON, July 10. —Forced t<s eat flying fish as a means of sustenance was only one of many hardships endured by the crew of nineteen of the steamer Baralba from Newcastle-on-Tyne, bound for Adelaide. Their privations began in the Indian ocean, and was due to the snail’s progress made Kl consequence of terrific head winds. Eventually all the rations gave out including the emergency biscuit ration in the lifeboats. For many days the ship only progressed three knots and at night was forced to run without lights, owing to the shortage of paraffin. For days on end the menu was: Breakfast, ground rice; dinner, beans; supper, biscuits and tea without milk or Sugar. The crew, on empty stomachs, worked at shifting coal at sea. They sighted a sailing ship, but were too slow to catch up and ask for food. The crew made tobacco of rope yam, hops, and tea and they say it jteimoked good.”

LEGISLATURES SHOW INTEREST IN CHILD LAWS Indiana Takes Lead in Welfare Work for Children of Country. Timet Washington Bureau. 1321 Xew York Avenue. WASHINGTON, July 10.—Though 1925 has been a bad year for the child labor" amendment to the Constitution, it has been a good year for State laws intended to improve the welfare of children. Nearly all of the forty State Legislatures which were in session during the fleet half of the year showed an interest in laws affecting children. Reports of laws assuring better schools, better playgrounds and' better treatment at the hands of juvenile court officials have been received by the United States Children’s Bureau. These ranged from setting aside corners of public parks for playgrounds to statutes affecting the legal status of illegitimate children. Only three States this year ratified the child labor amendment, but in nine States laws were enacted relating to the employment of children. California, Arizona and Wisconsin joined the States which have Indorsed the amendment. The nine States which passed child labor legislation were California. Massachusetts, New~Mexlco, New York, Ohio, Texas, Tenessee, Wisconsin and Wyoming. \ The general trend of these laws was to increase the age limit at which children may be regularly employed and to shorten the hours of work. In several cases, and notably In Massachusetts, the opposite tendency was noted. The Massachusetts legislators provided that children between 14 and 16 may be granted permits to work without fulfilling the educational requirements previously demanded. Formerly certificates showing completion of the sixth grade were required. Compulsory school attendance laws *vere strengthened in several states and have now become almost universal. Though the chief consideration was given to improving the school and working conditions of normal children, some states showed par ticular interest in the welfare ,of physically handicapped children and in ohphans and other dependent children. Pennsylvania, Indiana, Connecticut and New York took the lead in this regard, each of these states passing measures assuring better of crippled and indigent children. New York, New Hampshire and Oregon attempted to lighten the burdens of illegitimate children by assuring them the right to inherit the estates of either or both parents. The recreation sought by minors was taken into consideration in a number of states, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas. Maine, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin all either passed or took under advisement measures which would regulate children’s attendance at public dance halls and other resorts. ’ MORE PONIES TO PRINCE BUENOS AIRES, July 10.—Five of the finest polo ponies in Argentine will be presented to the Prince of Wales when he arrives.
