Some of us still like our jazz noisy but good, and these men tantalize the bluest notes until they sound like a symphony of action. Paul Biese, the Goliath-like famous orchestra leader, was born April 11, 1887, a few miles from what is now known as St. Joseph, Mich At the age of she secured his first lessons on violin and saxophone from his father, now a retired musician. When 7 years old he studied saxophone with Jules Lefevre, America’s premier saxophonist. The following years found Paul Biese in various parts of the country as violin and saxophone soloist, conductor, band leader, recording director and in essentially every field where music is considered. Biese holds the record for being America's first dance saxophonist, having played this instrument in the flenst cases in the country years before the public demanded the saxophone in our modern orchestras. Biese has mastered every member of the saxophone family, from the smallest soprano saxophone to the largest double bass. Asa clarinet player and violinist he has few equals. During his recent engagement in Los Angeles and Hollywood, Biese consented to teach saxpohone to Jackie Coogan, the famous boy film star.
