The pallor of his face touched her. “I would have spared you that Miss Bryce. I wouldn't have had you see that for the world.” It was his first word since the poignant moment when they had seen the two figures, his sister and the man, clasped in each other’s arms. She answered softly: “I know. It doesn't matter.” “It does matter. You will think about it. You will wonder. It will spoil the beauty of things—” She shut her e? es, there went through her a flashing hurt. “No—the beauty of things is not that frail, is it—” He looked into her face. Slowly transforming his own that had been white with resentment, came a rapt and lighted eagerness. His lips moved. Chickie put out her hand: “Let us go.” He stood before her motionless. All about them was the hush; the deep, still music of the summer night. From the garden came dreamily the perfume of mignonette and -oses. It closed about them with a gentle languor. “Let us go!” But his hands reached out. They touched light as flowers on her shoulders: suddenly they wrapped about her, nervous, ecstastic. The next moment Lee Willman dropped to his knees and seizing her hand, pressed It against his burning lips. She let him do this, stilled with pity. But her heart swelled. It peemed opening and closing with a rush of awful pain. After a moment she said again: “Let us go.” He followed her, silent, absorbed. At the door his hand touched hers. It was very cold. This coldness went into her thoughts. She lay awake wrapped in it. His face, white with emotion, remained before her. The rapt eyes pleaded. She wished to say “No — don’t look at me so—” They became more eager. She felt older —years older—she was older than Lee Willman. He came to her bringing the dreams of his fervid youth. There was joy in his look. All morning it haunted Chickie. She became so uneasy and restless that she went to Barbara. Barbara was walking around again. She would soon he entirely better.
