EVOLUTION OF THE USED CAR THE AUTOMOBILE HAS BEEN WITH ITS LITTLE MORE THAN A QUARTER OF A CENTURY. IN THAT TIME, HOWEVER, A LOT OF CHANGES HAVE TAKEN PLACE IN THE SELLING METHODS EMPLOYED. —vr-jANT of us can remember when the family iY i surrey, with its fringed top and elaborate oil N h lamps, formed the only conveyance in genLIUU era i use
Then came the automobile. At first, an object of derision —fax less dependable than the hjorsedrawn vehicle, not much faster, and, incidentally, costlyffco buy and 'costlier to keep.
Gradually, the mechanical defects were done away with and the really good car arrived. Year after year new models came out, ea"ch a little better than its predecessors. The public began to really desire automobiles. With this desire came a market for used cars. - At iirst, the used car buyer was legitimate game. Dealers took advantage of him at every turn. Anew coat of paint was made to cover up and blot out the marks of the junker. Cork in the differential gave a noble purr. Graphite in worn bearings helped materially. The object was to sell the car. If it fell to pieces a square from the salesroom, nobody cared but the buyer. Sales were usually for cash. The buyer had no comeback. And it followed, as the dawn the dark, that the used car business received a bad name. Ultimately, dealers woke up to the fact that they were killing the goose that laid the golden egg. They could not sell new cars unless they took used cars in trade. And once they took in the u~'d cars, they kept them. The supply of suckers hau run out. Something had to be done. Capital, tied up in an overwhelming used car stock, was utterly worthless. Unless the cars could be sold, the end was in sight. In many cases the end arrived and the bankruptcy courts preached the funeral orations.
gan to be bought solely on the buyer’s judgment, without regard to the representation of the dealer. The used car market had passed through the first stage of transition. Years passed again. Dealers who had stayed in business had built public confidence. People belDved them, because they knew that in the present day no dealer would be foolish enough to ruin his business by getting a reputation for unfair dealing. But, at the best, a used car was a used car. The cream of the service was gone. The used car buyer expected trouble—and got it. lie came to realize that there was little economy in buying a used car, even though the price was low, if the repair bills ran so high that .he might as well have purchased a new' car in the first place. In many cases he was right. But dealers knew that there was such a thing as a good used car. So they‘began to refuse to take cars in trade unless they were still good and serviceable. The used car became a better buy and the used car market passed through the.second stage of transition.
Today, Losey-Nash Motor Company maintain!! a big plant, entirely for the purpose of reconditioning the cars taken in trade on the new Nash.
We do not take worn out cars and try to rebuild them. But we do take the good used cars, as they come in, and make them as nearly perfect as we possibly can. Skilled mechanics go over every car, replacing worn parts, tightening, cleaning, examining throughout. Aftier the cars have been reconditioned, they must pass the most rigid inspection before they are adjudged worthy to be sold to our customers. Every car is priced fairly and honestly: And, finally, mindful if the doubt that has remained from the old days of '‘Let the Buyer Beware,” we absolutely guarantee Losey-Nash used cars with a written policy of “Assured Transportation.” And we believe that the used car market is passing into its third and final stage of transition, with this black-and-white that the buyer is getting his money’s worth, when he buys from LoseyNash Motor Company. Inspect our cars in process of reconditioning and be convinced!
