CLUB FIRMLY FOR KEEPING STREET OPEN \ Civic Improvement Body to Send Ford Manager Resolution. R® affirming its position on Oriental St., the Southeastern Civic Improvement Club, voted Thursday night to send a copy of a resolution demanding the street remain open, to the manager of the Ford Motor Company at Detroit. Closing of the street “to save an industry for Indianapolis" was declared ridiculous by; members. Dangerous Precedent John F. White, president declared "The track elevation program should be for the benefit of the entire community. It would be establishing a dangerous precedent to favor a particular industry.” Edward J. Sexton, secretary, said the Ford officials had not shown the civic pride manifested by other industries. "Special privileges cannot be legislated. Every industry has the same right. Other plants have paid their part and said nothing," said Sexton. Write to C. of C. Attitude of the club was set out in a letter to John B. Reynolds, secretary of Chamber of Commerce. "I am not in favor of driving industries out of Indianapolis, hut recent newspaper articles on the Oriental St. project and talk of the Chamber of Commerce are !)0 per cent bluff,” declared Charles P. Harnaham. Councilman Otto Ray, who favors keeping the street open, said he did not think the board would reconsider the question.

Excellent Roads Lead to Lakes
No matter how hot the summer, the heat will never take the Joy out of a week-end trip to any of the many beautiful and refreshing lakes located In northern Indiana. A trip of this sort will afford the tourist and his family a chance to participate in all kinds of outdoor activities. The touring department of the Hoosier Motor Club has outlined a trip to Lakes Manitou, Maxinand Bass, all located in comparative close relation to each other. The route: Drive north on N. Meridian St. over State Rd. 1, passing through Carmel, Kokomo, and Peru to Rochester, where Lake Manitou is one mile east of the city in Fulton County. To reach Lake Maxinkuckee continue north on State Rd. 1 to Argos west on State Rd BO to Culver situated at Lake Maxinkuckee. From Culver continue west on State Rd. 50 to Bass Lake. A different return route may he taken on leaving Bass Lake by driving south on State Rd. 15, passing through Winamac to Logansport. At Logansport drive east on State Rd. 7 to State Rd. 1 and south to Indianapolis. From Indianapolis to Lake Maxinkuckee distance is 121 miles. From there to Indianapolis, distance is 128 miles. Route from Indianapolis to Peru is over paved road. Remainder of route outlined is over good gravel roads. At each lake are splendid resorts and provisions for parties to remain over night.

Mayor Shank has announced he | will allow his successor to bear the brunt- of tax reduction by recommending a reduction in the budget, thereby decreasing the tax levy for 1926. The general tendency of department chiefs Is to submit the same budget for 1926 as for 1926, throwing the burden of reduction upon Joseph L. Hogue, city controller, and Mayor Shank. Hogue has announced that all estimates must be submitted by July 1. In the Japanese and several other languages there Is no word for kiss.
