FIREPLACE, WITH REAL LOGS, AGAIN IN FAVOR

Simple Designs and More Harmonious Construction Being Used at Present — Grate Becomes Keynote for Entire Room. ESSENTIAL PART OF NEW LIVING ROOMS / ————— Can Be Made Appropriate for Rustic Bungalows, Georgian Homes, Colonial Cottages or Any Other Type of House. By Molly Elliott While novelists and sociologists are wondering how to “bring the family back .to the home,” architects and builders are making the home more .worth coming back to by incorporating as an essential part of almost every living room today a fireplace of one kind or another. Not a gas grate *or a wall ornament. In which red-hot asbestos flows, but a real fireplace, where burning logs radiate hospitality and cheer is the present style. And in keeping with this return to the original fuel for the fireplace, there has been a return to simpler designs and more harmonious construction. A fireplace is no longer .an affair of gingerbread carvings, scroll-edged mirrors and shelves for £ J:nick-knacks. It is a central feature and a keynote for the entire room, harmonizing with it in both color and design. Low and Wide For example, in one lovely home in which the architect has placed un- • usual emphasis upon horizontal i lines, the fireplace is unusually low and wide. It is constructed of a deep cream-toned terra-cotta, inset with a design in colored tile, and above the grate opening Is a conventionalized sun-motif from which the rays spread in strong horizontal , lines. Contrasting -with this, there is a magnificent fireplace, in an-' other home in which the feeling is for vertical lines rather than horizontal Here an artist has designed a fireplace of terra-cotta extending from the floor to the ceiling. Figures With Torches At each side of the grate opening modelled in low relief are graceful male figures, poised as if springing into the air, and each figure holds an uplifted torch. The room of which this fireplace Is the center is, of course, similar in Its lines and colorings—no other fireplace would have fitted into It so perfect’y, and no other room could have formed so suitable a background for such a fireplace. These two, however, are somewhat out of the ordinary, but there are fireplaces equally appropriate for rustic bungalows, Georgian homes, Tudor living rooms, Colonial cottages and “just houses.” The home-builder will do well to consider all of them to determine which, is best suited for his particular home.

USE OF BEST MATERIALS FOR PAINTING URGED Aldag Paint and Varnish Cos. Advises Care in Selection of Supplies. As the saying goes, a silken purse cannot be made from a sow’s ear. In other words, good material is necessary for a good product, and when this product is paint, the Ingredients must be the purest linseed oil, zinc and lead, say otticials of the Aldag Paint and Varnish Company, 426 E. Washington St. The Aldag Company are dealers in the nationally known Lowe Bros, paints and varnishes, recommended as excellent for finishing the house from front porch to kitchen, and when one paints it is economy to buy the best. A paint that is not good not only makes a very unsatisfactory looking job, but calls for re-painting much sooner than if a good paint had been used, and the cost of applying the paint is as much or more than the material itself, according to paint experts. This applies equally well to the varnishes and enamels used inside the house, for the best quality will withstand hard wear and washing, while a poor paint soon loses its sheen and color. Lovely effects can be obtained by a judicious use of paint in' finishing breakfast tables and chairs, and the painted kitchen answers the requirements of both bailty and sanitataion if the color is carefully chosen.

BACKGROUND IS IMPORTANT IN CREATING HOME Interior Decorator’s Art Necessary, Declares E. P. Long. Importance of a background in creating a beautiful home can hardly be overestimated, and it Is the business of E. P. Long, interior decorator, 205 E. Ohio St., to supply such a background-. Many homes and artistically finished public buildings in Indianapolis show proof of the excellence of his work. For many living rooms of today the preference is either for a roughsurface paper finished in stippled effect or for stippled painted walls. Either of these form an excellent background for pictures, and not infrequently the woodwork of the room is given the same stippled finish, which blends It into the wall with pleasing results. All of this work, however, calls for careful workmanship. Long has an enviable reputation in tills line. A telephone call will bring the decorator to estimate on work, or a visit to the attractive shop. Just around the comer from Delaware St. on E. Ohio St. will more than repay the home owner by furnishing him with many attractive Ideas on the decoration of his house, either inside or out. TUSCHINSKY TO LEARN MORE OF ART IN EUROPE Manager of Hillsdale Landscape Company Goes Abroad. For the same reason that American artists go abroad to perfect their work, Alex Tuschinsky has gone to England and Italy to learn about the newest and loveliest things in his art —that of creating beautiful living landscapes with trees and shrubs. Tuschinsky, general manager of the Hillsdale Landscape and Nursery Company, is more than a nurseryman; he is a landscape architect who has developed some of the finest estates in and around Indianapolis. At Laurel Hall The magnificent ground of Laurel Hall on the Mlllersville Rd., are in themselves, enough to make him known throughout the country, and this ‘s only one of many beautiful estates he has landscaped. In the nurseries a mile south of Castleton and an eight-mile drive from Indianapolis on the Allisonville Rd., Tuschinsky has arranged a formal rose garden to show customers how such a garden should be planted, and from the thousands of shrubs of various kinds that grow in the nursery one may select shrubbery to suit any taste. “Post-Grad” Course Upon his return from abroad, the landscape architect will be glad to give Indianapolis home-owners the benefit of his “post-graduate” course in garden-planning. In the meanwhile, however, the nursery Is in the hands of a very capable assistant, who may be reached by calling Washington 4729, ring 1. shoifld one need to plant new shrubs or replace old ones.
