CHICKIE

Chiekie (Helena), only daughter of Jonathan and Jennie Bryce, loves Barry Dunne, a young- lawyer with Tufts & Lennox. Wealthy Jake Munson, friend of Janina Knowles and Amy Heaton, tells Chiekie he considers Barry s feeling only a boy’s love and that he will be waiting when Barry has jilted her. Ila Moore's father expects to engage Barry to represent locally the Gulf Steamship Company of San Francisco, and Ila invites him to tour the world with her Dttfty. When . Chiekie accuses him of loving Ila. a auarrel follows and he leaves on the trip. In desperation she telegraphs him when she realizes she must endure the consequences of her love. When Barry tells Chiekie he has been married to Da for two weeks, Chiekie takes the name of Mrs. John Clayton. buys herself a wedding ring and goes to the country home of Mrs. Agnes Bobbins for a vacation. Dorothy Wrenden. a hotel clerk at Lancaster, agrees to forward Chickie’s mail under her assumed name. Chiekie becomes the mother of a tiny girl. When she learns that her mother is ill she leaves with the baby in the nurse’s absence. The doctor tells Chiekie the child is dead. When Jennie recovers. Jimmie Blake again calls on Chiekie. 9he returns the money Barry sent for the child and tries to keep her parents ignorant of her past, but the coroner’s agent calls at Chickie’s home and reveals the affair. Jonathan orders him ° Ut- GO ON WITH THE STORY By Elinore Meherin All the time that tortured cry of love that dies breaking on her ears: .“My God! My God!’’ Hearing it, she tried to heat his hands away. She pushed with all her frenzied strength and sobbed: “Let me go—you let me go—you will!’’ But he laid her on the bed. He said, with his lips white under the straggly mustache: “Chiekie— Chiekie girl—your Dad ’’ She hid from him. She pushed him away. He wiped her face. He kissed It. And suddenly lifting her In his arms he rocked her —as though she were a baby. Holding her like that, fast against him, he cried. He cried and cried. Her heart broke, and all her faith and hope. . It grew dark. It was quiet. Only a cry—a dying cry in her ears. She knew that —and nothing. • * •

OR it had happened—the ! r I' brutaJ thing. Months of piteL J ous bravery; months of aching aloneness. Now this—oh, the world would know —and Jimmy—and Mary—oh, all—all— Figures moved in Chickie’s room. They whispered. And there was—a thing that had been glad—the proudest heart in all the earth because of her —that Jonathan. Now he walked about the hall. He chewed his lips—he chewed his heart. Then Jennie came and sat beside thg bed. Her hands were over her eyes. Chickie knew nothing—nothing of this. She would awaken, drink it all anew, fresh fulled with pain. In her dreams she prayed. The dreams brought drops like cold heavy blood to her forehead. She told tnem. Oh, it died —oh, see she was bringing it home —bringing it to them —then it grew cold—so cold —here —right here against her breast—feel it—put your hand there —oh, all the time it was there—always— Half conscious, she cried out; “Jonathan—go”— and would have sprung from the bed; would have dashed to the window. No—they didn’t know. They couldn’t know. God wouldn’t do this to her—God would not dare —“Go—oh, Jonathan —you go!” Jennie tjirned at that, but Jonathan came and kneeled at Chickie’s bed. He pressed his old face in her hands, murmuring: “Chickie— Chickie, girl ” Night worse than death—night when youth creeps away and every vestige of Joy—even the last shred of hope— She was awake. She turned from them, begging to die. Oh, let her die—she wou,ld —she would Jennie touched her hands. She wept, and couldn’t find it in her heart to say the slightest word. Jennie hid her face on Chickie’s shoulder. Chickie said: “Oh, leave me, mother —go—oh, you kill me—oh, if I could die—mother, go-go ” It was Jonathan who put his arm on Jennie’s shoulder. He said quietly, “No, mother, stay.” He looked at Chickie, but there was no chuckle in his eyes. Yet anew thing—a light—a deep, sacred light. He lifted her in his arms. He crooned about her as though he were the mother. “We’ll meet it, Chickie, girl—you and your old dad together.” “No—oh, Jonathan —God—God —I tell you no!” She tried to slip from him. “But here, now—here, now ” “Jonathan, I won’t go there—l won’t—oh, dead—lt died. I held it •—oh, you know —you know ” “Here, now—here, now ” “You won’t take me back —nono— —” “Chickie, girl, we’re brave—you and your old dad. Never mind now.” And there was no escape. He knew this. Now she know it—bear it all —stand up and take it all. •• CHAPTER CIX Exposure mHEY knew. The blasting shame was hers. After all. Months of crucifixion ,- — an awful night when she had run along a bridge. The waters were so dark, so cold, lapping at her feet—Oh — that she had dropped in them —forgotten nowShe sat at her window, dressed inert, dumb. She didn't remember having dressed, she didn’t recall how she came to be sitting there—so early now—so hushed and sweet the morning air. Tears stood in her eyes. They didn’t fall. she made no

slightest move; the strings of her being were • muted. They knew—those two in there knew— Yet the sun flared out; a sparrow chirped; Jennie’s hyacinths exhaled a perfume to the singing breeze. Beauty of a young, live world; world of Spring; near, at her hand — but not for her. She was quiet in a darkness; shoved into a waste. Beating desolately against her like waves on a ship that sinks; that gives up the flght and sinks, were the words, the frenzies the anguish of the night just gone. She let her head drop back; let the memories beat. Ah—Jonathn had rocked her in his arms. But Jennie said, frightened, unbelieving: *‘A baby! My Chiekie?’’ Suddenly, unbearable as a knife running through her flesh it had come to her that Jennie—little Jennie—her mother with the plump and gentle breast, would rather she had died—much rather —would give her up gladly—put her in a grave. Chiekie had run then to a window; sought to hurl herself out. A doctor had come; they had forced some drink to her lips. Deadnees crept upon her —a leaden absence. It was upon her now. Six o’clock—in two hours that man with the red, heavy face would come for her; take her back to the country—force her again through all the tragic, scenes. Make her tell about the baby; how it grew so cold; how It stiffened in her arms. Oh—tell to all that whispering town the thing that she had done —the things that had been done to her. They said she must. She must do thiti—but it would be a dead thing that spoke—not her Now, there was a stirring in that room ot theirs. Now Jonathan was soothing* "Mother don’t! Hush, mother. That’s no way.” Crying —Jennie cried all night. Too late now Then Jonathan was coming down the hall. She heard his weighty steps. Coming to her, coming to say those kindly things—ah, but she would see the paleness of his lips; see his face all crossed with pain. Leave her alone —step over quietly and lock her door

UDDENLY there was a ringing at the bell; suddenly l____ voices—a man who said: “You might as well, Mr. Bryce. Give her side of it. It’s out, already" Jonathan answering, suppressed, bewildered. Then, rumbling in a low fury: “You don’t! I’ll kill you!” A door slammed; a lurching, giant body pitching from wall .to wall. Chickie’s hands flew to her throat. She reached her father’s side. He pushed her; plowed like a tortured animal down the passage—into the kitchen. He had the morning paper in his hand. He said: "Go away—Chickie—go away” She held to his arm—tried to speak. Her breath whirled dizzily—in a sickness. “Let me see” He shook his head. She begged, half fainting: “Oh, yes—l will—l will” —and snatched the paper from his lifeless hand. Only a line of that she saw: “Girl in Death Probe.” Only that. The blood went hot and thick and made a blindness in her eyes. She fought it back. She turned from him with that gone and broken look in the rugged face. She said in a quiet: “Doesn’t matter." Then read it word for word. “Summoned to attend a coroner’s inquest to inquire into the death of her infant daughter two months ago, under circumstances declared mysterious, Mrs. John Clayton was served with a subpoena by Deputy Sheriff Bert Ricks last night. "According to Ricks,\ a quiet investigation of the case has been under way by the authorities for several weeks. The child, born on the farm of Mrs. Agnes Robbins, is declared to have been in good health when secretly taken away hy the mother four days after birth. “It is alleged to have died the same evening in the sanitarium of Dr. Robert Emerson, who attended the mother at the birth. Mrs, Clayton, Ricks said, then hurriedly left, leaving funeral arrangements with Dr. Emerson. He is said to have signed the death certificate. The physician has also been summoned to appear before the coroner’s Jury. “Added mysterV, Kicks declares. Is the fact that Mri. Clayton was known as Miss Heler a Bryce in Lancaster, where she stopped at a fashionable hotel for several days at a time prior to the birth of the infant. Search for John Clayton has been fruitless.” * * • S”'l HE read it again. Madness—silence —Jonathan, upright, great arms lifting her: “Brave, Chickie girl—brave”— Then she was lying on a bed and shades were drawn —lying quietly as one in a coffin. Soon, they would come and pull the cover—oh, the

peace of that—how she would smile —rest then . She stared at the ourtains —the new pongee curtains Jennie had made, being so glad to have her home again; wanting to surprise her Then Jennie came in with a tray —like all those festive Sunday mornings. But Jennie didn’t look at her. She said gently: “Chiekie, dear—drink this—you must be strong. Chiekie said: “Oh, mother —the look of your face—oh, mother" "No, dear—why, I’m all right—drink it—you must leave soon" Chiekie turned her face against the pillow. Jennie insisted: “Drink it, dear.” "Oh—if I could die—and I will mother —I will” “No—here”—— And there were voices again—she closed her hands on her face. And there were voices aagin—the house was filled with voices. Jennie came back to the room—- “ Get ready, dear ” Like a sentence of doom —as though Chiekie we-e in the death chamber and it was her mother—no other than her mother who came and drew the black cap down. She stood, holding to the bureau—trying to straighten her hair—trying to find a glove that lay directly before her. Then she listened to the voices and a shock went through her. For the voice was saying: ‘Don’t let her worry—it will be all right. Weil see to that ” She must be raving—she must have lost her mind. For she fancied the voice was Jake’s. He was talking to her father—and Jonathan listened and seemed to grow rugged again. A step—light, elastic—an arm about her. Oh—she cowered—she drew back. It was Jake. Talking to her—rich, mellow voice—gentle—confident “Don’t be afraid, Chiekie, my dear, I don’t want to bother you. But don’t be crushed by this. Too bad. I came to tell you something—tell you that it will be all right. I know Dr. Emerson—know him well. I phoned this morning. It’s a shame —bringing you into this. Case of professional jealousy. Rick is the coroner—never loses a chance to block the doctor. You see, the doctor is a newcomer and has stolen all his thunder. It’s a small town feud. They’ve brought you into that ” She forced herself to look at him —though she couldn't steady her lips to the forming of a single word, Jake took her hands that were so cold in his warm, firm clasp. He said “My poor, little darling—don’t worry—no one will think of this, Chiekie, my dear. That’s why I came. You mustn’t want to hide away. Look here—l have a friend in Lancaster—a lawyer—brilliant fellow. I’ve asked him to step in there. Do as he says, Chiekie, Answer as he tells you to. It will be all right—yes, it will. Your friends won’t change.” She knew that the black, flashing eyes were full of sorrow—they went kindly over her blanched, still face. He pressed her hands—he lowered his head and kissed them. He said, softly: “They won’t hurt

The Inquest S 1- “1 O many times Chiekie had glanced at her face in the mirror and, flushing to find herself so radiant, had gone singing through the hall; h*.d kissed Jennie with such a princt -s’ grace. Jennie was. so shy and pleased; so proud of this, their pretty one. Her eyes had often filled. Just for the tenderness. Wondrous to have that slim, bright creature coming and going in a little cottage like this—loving them — Chiekie knew her mother's thought, read it well. And today, pulling a veil over her hat, she paused. Oh, shame is hard to take; hard to bend a head that has been hijh. Jennie felt it so. That was the hing that hurt; that went into Chickie’s lifeless heart and stirred the chords to pain. She stood beside her mother and felt so crushed she didn’t even raise her hand. She waited with dry eyes and whitened lips. Slow, heavy tears ran to Jennie's chin. Her hand, soft now, but thin, crept to Chickie’s shoulder, brought Chickie’s head down. It was' like sobbing the way she said: “Ah—ah— Chiekie, dear” — “Good-by—well, good-by, mother”— Jennie clung to her. Chiekie begged. "Oh, mother, don’t—’’ and dropped the veil about her face. Then Jennie cried and stood half hidden at the door and didn’t wait till they were gone, but closed it softly. Closed it softly as one who has a thing to hide and cannot bear the friendly morning sun. Jennie felt a shame—shame for her, the bright and pretty one— And Chiekie knew It —the pang went deep like a blade turning and turning In a secret wound. When slje let herself all huddle down in J/ie comer of the sheriff's automobile, Jonathan patted her hands. He sat erect and said so gently: “No, now—Chiekie, girl—” But she thought and bowed with the thought: "Jennie is ashamed.” Oh, she hadn’t waited; hadn’t watched them go. She had closed the door so softly. Fearing faces at other doors; fearing curious glances and eyes peeking from windows. In the morning pape* it was blazoned out. They sped along. Never return. Go on and on. No crueler thing could happen now. Walk through that town and let them all come out and fling their stones.
