minutes, for big black clouds of smoke come down and nearly choke us to death.. When we have the windows and doors open at night in order to sleep during this hot weather, we nearly choke from the gas from the dense clouds of smoke. I think something should be done right away, for that is injurious to your health. A RESIDENT. H. F. Templeton, city smoke Inspector, is fighting for adoption of anew smoke code that will allow him to take action against situations such as the one you mention. It is embodied In an ordinance the city council is considering at present. The smoke is caused by the firing of locomotives in rapid succession at the roundhouse. Under existing regulations, thirty minutes is allowed for firing each engine. The new code would allow' only six minutes. Templeton says he could clear up this situation If the code is adopted. Under this code patrol wagon rides for violators would be not at all unlikely. i* you would end this unpleasant situation ask your councilman

to vote for passage of the ordinance. DEAR MR. FIXIT: T have read daily of the good you are doing in regard to having streets and the like repaired. I would like for you to see if you could have the sewer that is on W. Bernard Ave. (600 block), located between Byram and Rookwood Aves. cleaned. It has been in about eleven years and the street was paved about two years ago. The last several rains we had, the water has backed into our basements in the neighborhood, leaving a terrible odor. Would thank you kindly for looking into this matter. MRS. C. J. MUELLER. 517 W. Bernard Ave. An inspector from the street commissioner’s department will visit this location soon, according to W. P. Hargon, clerk. The sewer force undoubtedly will take care of the situation. DEAR MR. FIXIT: In the neighborhood of Dearborn and St. Clair Sts. an electric light is needed very badly, and aboAt a year ago the people in this vicinity brought up a petition with signatures of twelve names. It was taken personally to the board of works. No one has ever heard anything about It. It simply has been ignored. Won't you please give this your attention?. We would surely appreciate your Interest. EAST SIDE FOLKS. Four hundred petitions similar to your own are on file, James Hensley, superintendent of street lighting, said today. No funds are aavailable for this purpose at present, but the 1926 budget is being prepared to include these badly needed lights. When the new downtown light standards have been installed, Hensley will have a number of lights for transfer to the residential district. He may be able to take care of you at that time. DEAR MR. FIXIT: I wish to have your help in getting an alley and boulevard repaired. In the 1300 block on Bridge St., the boulevard washed out and all the dirt and water runs In the yards. The alley has always been impassible, but at present resembles a dump. Thank-

ing you for your most sincere effort in getting this looked after. TIMES READER. Frank Reid, inspector of city streets, promised Mr. Fixit he would visit your street within the next few days and recommend relief measures. DEAR MR. FIXIT: Will you please see what can be done about fixing E. Walnut St. from Noble to Fulton Sts.? It Is without a doubt one of the worst squares in the city. The street Is filled up until it is on a level with the walks and they are broken in many places by autos and wagons. Tonight it looks like a lake, water over the entire atreet and walks almost covered. It has been this way for the past four years or more. Two or three times a bunch of junk from other streets has been placed In the holes, but that is as far as it has ever gone. On the south side of the street from Noble to Spring is a row of garages. They have no driveways. The fact is they don’t need them, as the street is on a level with the walks and the man who built them no doubt, knowing how long the street had been in that condition.

I have not seen it so long I woudn’t swear to it. ‘ Now If you can do anything for us, I will say you are a wonder and deserve a world of credit. D. W. E.
