RECENT RAINS PROVE AID TO STATE ROADS Possible Now to Improve Stone and Gravel Highways. Heavy rains throughout the State In the last week have made It possible to improve gravel and stone roads, It was announced John D. Williams, director of the State highway commission, in the traffic bulletin issued today. Maintenance forces had been working under extreme handicap during the dry spell and the traveling public should notice a big improvement since the rains, according to road officials. Surface conditions of highways entering Indianapolis are set forth in the bulletin as follows: No. 1 (New Albany. Indianapolis, South Bend, Michigan line)—Pavement irom Franklin to Peru. One-way traffic during day while Kelly Ave. bridge over Wabash River is being repaired In Peru. Runaround at unsafe bridge two and one-half miles north of Edinburg. Turn right at comer of Tipton and O’Brien Sts. in Sey ; mour on marked detour via Chestnut 1 Ridge, returning to No. 1 at seven miles north of CromersviUe. No. 15 (Indianapolis, Logansport. Michigan City)—Closed for six miles south of Logansport. account construction. Good detour marked. No. 37 (Indianapolis. Anderson. Muncie) —Closed from Muncie via Anderson to Pendleton for raving: detour marked. No. 22 (English Paoli. Bedford. Bloomington. Marti isville, Indianapolis)—Road between Martinsville and Bloomington and from English to Paoli will be closed all summer for paving. Through traffic between Martinsville and Bloomington should go via Spencer over Roads 12 and 32. There is a passable detour in dry weather around paving between Martinsville and Bloomington, out It is thirteen miles long. Detour road also is so narrow iu most places" that two vehicles can not pass.
