THE TANGLE
LETTER FROM LESLIE PRESCOTT TO RUTH BURKE, CONTINUED Syd says that when he had about reached the landing—he Is rather uncertain on the point, because everything was happening so fast and furious—that he could indistinctly see two men stoop and pick up an inanimate form and carry it into the drawing room and out through the French window. Still thinking it wa3 I, Syd rushed after them. The automobile they had parked with the engine running, started off almost before they had thrown poor Zoe into the tonneau Syd, with great presence of mind, caught hold of the tire rack and clung on, unknown to those in the car. They drove to the warehouse, where Jack found Zoe and two of the men carried her in. He heard one of the men say that he didn’t think she was dead but that he would kill here if she didn’t come across. With a burst of profanity he talked about her double-crossing them. It was here that Syd learned that It was Zoe instead of me and the telephone conversation came back to him. They drove the car into an alley way and as they rounded the corner going In, Syd dropped off, and crouched behind a barrel until the driver had himself entered the building. He said he felt he should have telephoned to the police, but It was very late and he knew no place to do this. Feeling that the emergency

was great he followed as quietly as he could Into the warehouse. There he dropped in shadow behind a half open door. Zoe was lying on the floor In the middle of a half circle composed of five men—one of which pulled her roughly to a sitting posture. Her head, he said, was bleeding badly. The poor girl did not seem to realize where she was and dropped back on the floor when the man let go of her. Syd heard them asking over and over again, “Come across! Where the did you put them?” Zoe would only moan In reply. All the men spoke the argot of the underworld except one who had the manners and the intonation of a gentleman. While he was standing there wondering what he should do Syd said that one of the men rushed forward to the helpless girl, saying: “She won’t come to. I think you croaked her, Jim.” The other man turned with a snarl and knocked him down. Immediately there was a terrible melee. Syd thought he could get away with Zoe in the scramble, but the one who seemed to be the gentleman saw him and Syd was caught. TOMORROW —This litter continued.

BRIDE NEEDS LESSONS IN HOW TO LIVE BEST
SESTERDAY she was playing at your knee. Tomorrow you will give her away in marriage. So it seems to the adoring parrents of the June bride, as, somewhat bewildered by the rush of time, they watch her prepare for her wedding.
You have taught her to cook and to mend. You have shown her how to shop and how to make beds. These things are important. They are the mechanics of marriage. But have you taught her how to live? Have you shown her that tolerance is essential? Does she know that it is more important to have peace than to have the last word? Have you developed her sense of humor so that she does not overrate her own importance? Will she know how to meet the many problems she will face? If she has learned these, since the day she crawled at your knee, then you need not fear as you give her up to the man she loves. To the parents whose daughters are just beginninng the journey of life, this can be said: It is never too early to begin to teach your children how to make life worth while. Before you are well aware she is grown up, your daughter will be a June bride. Mother’s Darling Dear Mias Lee: My only daughter, who is 21 years old. is going to be married. She has never had to work or worry about anything, because her father and I have always done what we could for her. I want her to keep on living with me. but the man she is going to marry insists that they have their own home. I Just want to be where I can help them at first, because I know how hard it is. What can I say to persuade them I am right? WORRIED MOTHER. You poor soul, trying to live your daugflhter’s life! It simply cannot be done. You should have started long ago to prepare your daughter for the t me she would leave you. The best you can do now Is to set her free, and let her fight her own battles. I am glad your future son-in-law insists upon having his own nome. The best meaning mether-in-law is in the way during the first difficult months of marriage. You will have more influence with your children if let them live for themselves.
