HOMES BUILT IN LATIN STYLE ARE DISTINCTIVE

Spanish Mission and Italian Renaissance Designs Both Incorporate Some Very Attractive Features--Sev-eral in Indianapolis. z USUALLY FINISHED IN LIGHTER MATERIALS ■??Qf Often Flat ‘"and Will Hold Snow For Some Time —One Type Has Interior Courtyard, to Take Place of Front Porch. By Molly Elliott Having considered the types of modern residences that were derived from the English architectural designs, it might be well to touch upon those suggested by the Latin races before coming to the composite design that is broadly designated as "the square type house." For there have been some very lovely and picturesque Indianapolis homes based upon the Spanish mission styles and the designs suggestive of the Italian Renaissance, and both incorporate very attractive features. In the Spanish type house, as Is generally known, the favored material for exterior walls Is a rough stucco in white or cream tones, with a roof of brick-red tiles. These materials resemble closely those used in the countries from which the designs came and in architectural arrangement the best Spanish houses follow the design used in several southern countries. Unroofed Courtyard That is, instead of having front porch or none at all, the Spanish design incorporates an enclosed and unroofed courtyard shut away from the street and shaded on three sides or on all sides by the walls cf the house. This gives seclusion b) the dwellers within the house and coolness to the rooms that open onto the courtyard, but will not appeal :o the home owner who wishes to be seen by as well as see the passing world. Then too, the flat roof has been found objectionable by some architects because, in northern climates, it does not shed the snow} rapdily enough, and unless a ventilated air space is allowed, the heat of the sun also lingers too long. The design, however, is picturesque and full of color, and one north side residence has been giver, an almost breathtaking beauty by centering the house with a spacious, two-story living room with vaulted celling and walls tinted from deepest to palest blue. Windows to Floor In a residence In which the Italian design is suggested, the windows all reach to the floor and open on to tiny balconies railed with ornamental iron balconies. The porch is an open terrace paved with flag stones, and the walls are of buff brick so light that it resembles creamy marble. house, the beautiful stairway"has a balustrade of wroughtlron, tho handrail of which Is covered with crimson velvet, and the walls are canvassed and tinted in blended shades of ivory. In another design of similar type, the entrance hall is walled in Caen stone and floored in black and white narble. As may be seen from these examples, the type is most effective in larger houses, where elaborate grounds form a fitting background and space is not a matter to be considered.

FURNITURE FOR NEWLYWEDS IS EASILY BOUGHT Peoples Outfitting Company Offers ‘Royal’ Outfits. June is the month of brides and honeymoons, but if one would preserve the romance it is advisable to consider the realities—to _ take thought of the practical problems that confront newly married couples. The first and most important of these, of course, is the furnishing of a home, and whether it be a bungalow or an apartment, the Peoples Outfitting Company, 183-135 W. Washington St. and 32-36 Kentucky Ave., offers an excellently planned and economical outfit. The economy of “The Royal,” as they have named this home outfit, is due to the fact that it is bought in large enough quantities to supply fourteen different stores. This, of course, brings down the cost to the ultimate purchaser, as will be seen by the moderate cost of the pieces included. Outfit for S2OB The living room outfit, .for example, costs $208.50 and includes a large seamless wool velvet rug, a Kroehler overstuffed suite, a davenport table of Italian design, a floor lamp and tapestry table scarf, all that is necessary for an attractive room. For the dining room $108.50 will buy a large buffet with mirror back, an attractive oblong extension table and a host chair and five guest chairs, all upholstered in blue genuine leather slip seats and finished, as are thf other pieces, in the popular v. Mnut finish. American walnut has been used also ps .he finish for the distinctive bedroom suite, which consists of a bow-end bed, a dresser, a roomy chiffonier, a dressing table and a bench to match. A Simmons spring, a comfortable mattress and an artistic and durable Japanese rug completes the outfit for this room, the total price for the complete room outfit being $103.50. For Kitchen Finally comes the kitchen, with a. large congoleum art rug for the floor, a modern porcelain topped, kitchen cabinet, a Kitchen Queen gas stove, a porcelain topped cook table and a white enameled chair and stool. For $75 one may buy all of these kitchen necessities, bringing the total cost to less than S6OO, a very moderate amount for the furnishings of an attractive home. The store in which this outfit is for sale is only a few doors west of Illinois St. on Washington St. and for the convenience of those who come to Indianapolis on the busses there is an entrance on Kentucky Ave. STAYS OF .JAIL Clifford Tolan, 1201 S. State Ave., was free today as result of receiving a suspended thirty-day sentence a.n'da fin eof sls and costs Wednesday afternoon by Special Judge H. B. Pike when convicted on a speeding charge. Tolan appealed from city court, where he was fined sls and costs and given thirty days on the Indiana State Farm.

New Homes Lack Dining Rooms

Why go to the expense of furnishing a room that is seldom used more than one hour a' day and some times only t. few hours in an entire week? In other words, why not eliminate the least used room of the house—the dining room? For many years home builders have been considering this question, but it is only recently that Bridges and Graves, builders, 237 N. Delaware St., have solved it by the construction of seven "dlnlng-room-less” bungalows in the 2400 block on Union St. The location of these compact and efficiently arranged houses is most desirable, for they are within two blocks of both a school and 1 a carline and only two miles south of Washington St. Madison Ave. and Pleasant Run Blvd. form a direct route from downtown, and the block in which these bungalows have been erected ends in the beautiful boulevard along the creek. Save Space The location and exterior, however, is but a small part of the attraction these houses have for the home-seeker who desires a pleasant home at a reasonable cost. It is the space saving and money saving arrangement that appeals to the practical buyer, for he realizes that money is not only saved on the cost of furniture for the dining room, but on the cost of the house construction. He has five rooms for the cost of four, for the breakfast nook off the BEVERIDGE RAPS DAWES Bu Time* Special PORTLAND, Ind., June 11 Sharp disagreement with Vice President Dawes, was taken here Wednesday night by Ex-Senator Albert J. Beveridge who assailed the proposed cloture rule in the Senate “Too many laws now,’’ he said. "Restricting debate would mean more.” WAITS REMOVAL ORDER Elmer Brandford, colored, 23, of 25 W. Fifteenth,-St., is in the Marion County Jail today pending an order directing that he be removed to Louisville, Ky., where he is wanted on a charge of violation of the motor theft act. A preliminary hearing was held Wednesday afternoon before United States Commissioner Howard S. Young.

kitchen and the living room combine to serve as dicing space. For information and family meals the breakfast nook is ideal, and when “company” comes a gate-legged table in the living room may be converted into a charming dining table. The space thus saved by eliminating the dining room is used for a bedroom, so that each bungalow' has two bedrooms wdth a tile-finished bathroom between them. The bathroom and bedrooms open from a small hallway, an arrangement that gives desirable privacy to the house, and the kitchen is entered either through a grade entrance or from the welllighted living room. Finished Attractively The living room and bedrooms * are finished attractively in suitable papers and harmonizing woodwork, while the kitchens, which have excellent built-in cabinets, have enamelled w'alls and woodwork In light colors. By the arrangement of the rooms, the bodrooms are placed at the corners of the house, giving cross-ventila-tion to each. A large basement has places for laundry tubs and an excellent furnace. The kitchen and bathroom of each house has linoleum covered floors and cream-toned window' shades are a part of the equipment of every house. Electric outlets are conveniently placed In each room, and evefy effort has been made to create In these bungalows a small but complete home. The houses, complete with garage, ore for sale at prices ranging- from $4,200 to $4,400, depending upon their proximity to the boulevard. Concrete blocks and building material in these houses was furnished by O. L. Miller & Company: wall paper and decorating by Bethard Wall Paper Company; lighting fixtures by the Romer Electi-ic Company; wiring by George O. Applegate; lumber and millwork from Burnet-Binford Lumber Company; and the Rybolt furnaces nstalled by the Rybolt Heating Company.

KITCHEN WALLS CAN BE MADE PRETTY COLOR Hatfield Company Gives Suggestions for Beautification. The transformations that may be worked with paint are not limited to the face alone. In fact, far more satisfactory results are frequently to be had by a judicious application of paint to the kitchen walls for here it insures both sanitation and cheerful color. Washable paint, such as is sold ready mixed by the Hatfield 'Paint Company, 104 S. Meridian St„ has always been recognized as the ideal wall finish for the kitchen from the standpoint of sanitation, but home owners have been a long time In realizing the decorative possibilities of painted walls In this much used room. ' Painted Green At first there seemed to be a tendency to paint all kitchens a depressing and serviceable green or an unattractive tan. Then the vogue for the all-white kitchen arrived, and this part of the house took on a hos-pital-llke appearance, and W'as about as cheerless as the Interior of an Icebox. Recently, however, decorators have discovered that walls may be painted and washable without being either gloomy or bare loooking. It all depends upon the correct use of the proper paint. The Hatfield Paint Company can furnish the paint, and there, too, one may find many suggestions for improving the house, both inside and out, at a very moderate expense. For South Kitchen For example, what would be lovelier for a south kitchen than walls painted a delicate apple green, combined With woodwork enameled in a warm cream color? Or, for the southwest kitchen, cool-looking combinations of robin’s egg blue walls and gray woodwork. A north kitchen can be entirely transformed by walls of sunlight yellow and woodwork of a slightly lighter tone, w'hile a stencil design of black against such a wall makes the room a delight to the eye. Chairs mry be painted to match this minor note of color, and a linoleum of black and ivory block patterns will complete the interesting effect.

CAPITAL STOCK INCREASED BY LOAN COMPANY Fletcher Avenue Savings Association Has Steady Growth. Putting on a good front is one way of impressing the public, but a better way is to put a substantial foundation back of the front. That is what the Fletcher Avenue Saving and Loan Association, 10 E. Market St., has been doing for the past thir-ty-five years, and, as a result, the association has recently increased its capital stock from $15,000,000 to $25,000,000. - Second Increase "That- may seem like a large increase to make," Charles R. Yoke, secretary of the association, said. "But we realize the necessity of it because two years ago we increased our capital $8,000,000. Since that time, this amount has been oversubscribed, making the latest increase of $10,000,000 necessary." "We don’t put on very much of a ’front,’ ” Yoke explained, "and you won’t see a large and imposing office force around here or an expanse of marble walls. The salaries of the officers are not large, either, and all of these things tend to make us better able to serve our clients efficiently and economically. The thousands of homes that have been built or purchased through this association and the steady increase in our business since its founding in 1890, have made our recent increase in capitalization a necessity.” Original Officers The majority of the original officers and directors of the association are still with the Fletcher Avenue Savings and Loan. J. T. Peake, who was president, died recently and his successor hasKhot been elected. The other officers are C. B. Noble, W. A. Guthrie and Fred T. Reed, vice presidents, Charles R. Yoke, secretary, John Uhl, treasurer and George Q. Biegler, auditor. The association has a reserve fund of more than $133,784 and resources of $7,000,000. Yoke said.
