LAST HOPE FOR COLISEUM DIES / Merchants Not Willing to Shoulder Cost. East Washington St. merchants will not attempt to form an association to shoulder half the costs of a. municipal coliseum, the only method whereby the building may be built with financial support of the city, L. Hartman, appointed by PlNTayor Shank to sponsor the project, said today. Hartman. however, expressed opinion that the next Legislature will be asked to consider legislation providing the entire cost of municipal building may be borne by the city. Doom of the proposal, for which city council had favored appropriation of $465,000 for site at Washington, Davidson, Pine and Market Hts.. was sounded when Charles Ttemster, municipal tax expert, sustained opinion of James M. Ogden, corporation counsel, that city could legally assume onV half of costs, the remainder to be paid by an association or organization. “I'm dropping the proposition,” Hartman declared. A German kiventor has made a phonograph record that plays an hour. He said study in American colleges is becoming a perfeunctory ritual and 'earning a vanishing tradition in an atmosphere of organized athletics and social functions. Dean Pound spoke to more than 900 seniors and students in the new memorial stadium. Amplifiers were used. Following Dean Pound's address diplomas were conferred. Dean Pound said:. “For the last fifteen years I have had under me classes composed exclusively of graduates of approved colleges. Even in this selected group spelling is a lost art, and writing is too often in the language of' Ring Gardner. Long ago I learned to expect ‘hafto’ and ‘hadda’ and ‘oughta’ and ‘gotta’ and ‘if he would of known,’ and “he would of had to of had notice,” and iike specimens of the American Vulgate, whenever I am called upon to read examination books.
