WE’RE ALL GYPSIES UNDER LTHE SKIN, SAYS BERCOVICI

Bv United Prees NEW YORK, June 6.—This Is a springtime Interview for those whose feet now ltoh for the open road and whose minds wander far afield. “And that is all of us," smiles Konrad Bercovlcl from behind him Imposing mustaches. Bercovlcl, noted writer, teacher, musician, farmer, tramp, sailor and Internationalist, has Immortalized gypsy life and ways In his stories of the children of Romany. “To wander, to travel , to get away—lt Is an everpresent We express it In a thousand ways without realizing It. “The young couple marries and gees on a honeymoon. Why? To travel! It Is the atavistic expressing Itself, It was ever thus. It was the tribal custom for the young mates to depart and breed their children on the road. “Business Flips” Mere Excuses “We call then, commtiters. Millions of them begin the day with travel. They are trying to link the country with their daily tasks. "Most business trips are mere excuses for escape. “We are happy and what do we want to do? To wander, of course. We crave to travel. And we are unhappy. And again we want to run away. We save our money and when we have it we want to go to Europe and the European wants to come to America. Vacations? The same thing. "And spring comes and we all feel it. I have heard people speak of the American stationary objects. Americans are the greatest of Nomads. Look at the country roads of a Sunday. Nowhere in the world have I seen folk going, going—here and there and everywhere. It’s the blood of all the restless ones of the world who have come here. “It all goes back to those far-away

times when men were either b vpherds or agriculturists. And those wjio were shepherds wandfered. And those who were agriculturists stayed with the soli. Then would come the time when the two would meet and fight. If the agriculturists won they would take the shepherds captive and the rovers would be tied to the soil. “We can read an analogous story into our own times, if we wish. There still goes on the fight betwen the city and the open. “What of the gypsies in America? Os course, they use automobiles. That does not mean that their ways are materially changing. When the gypsy traveled with his horses, the horse served a double purpose; It was a means of conveyance and the means of livelihood. The gypsy would stop and trade horses. That isn’t so easy In America. So he uses the automobile which he can barter.” Bercovlcl is at present working on a new' book dealing with the immigration problem and the government restriction of immigration. He has little patience with the “nordic supremacy” idea or with the idea of Americanization of foreigners through the “melting pot” system. “There is a feeling that the quicker a foreigner is assimilated the better,” he says. “That is wrong. The longer it takes, the better the citizen. Under the hasty-assimila-

tlon plan we create citizens who grasp the easiest things at hand by way of culture —the movie, the sheik literature, the stupid melodramas aniFwe lose background, tradition and culture w’hich otherwise would come. Rigid Raws Help Immigrants “The Immediate effect of the rigid immigration laws has been beneficial to the foreigners now in America. I find from observing them. It forced them to make up their minds Whether or not they were going to itay here. If they decided in the affirmative then they took the money they had been hoarding for a return home and turned It Into burner, and land and better conditions.' “The use of this money will mean better health for hundreds of thousands. for they now will 'be freer to give themselves things, where in the past they squeezed their pennies. “Eut if the practice is kept up. you will soon hear from the farm countries. The foreigners who take work as farm hands will compare their small wage to that received by city dwellers; they will compare their hours and their conveniences' and soon they will move to the cities. And there will be no more to call from. We will find many parallels for the abandoned farms of New England wjiere so many Poles and Italians have moved in.”
