Standard Dress for Economy Vlrs. John D. Sherman Gives Ideas on Woman’s Dress.
Bu EEA Srrricw iTirjiEST BADEN. Ind., June X. I\ly I —Have you passed .he * 1 twenty-year mark, Miss Flapper? If you have, it’s time to quit wearing short sleeves, thinks Mrs. John D. Sherman, president of the General Federation of Women's Clubs, which is holding its biennial council meeting here this week. Mrs. Sherman doesn't object to a display of arms on moral grounds. She doesn’t think bare arms are a dangerous vamping asset. - But she does believe that sleeveless gowns on women above 20 violate beauty. “The harder women try to look young the older they look,” she says. Mrs. Sherman also favors a standardized dress for women, with some allowance for individual variations. “Women pay so much for their clothes,” she says, "because the merchants don’t know whether a style will last three months or a year. Men’s styles don’t change, so they get clothes much cheaper. Through a standardized dress, all these style changes could be avoided.” Another point Mrs. Sherman advocates is the standardized school dress, particularly at graduation time. "I think mdre heartaches are caused at graduation time among girls who cannot afford expensive dresses, than at any other time in their lives,” she says. MORGAN CITES EVILS AND GOOD OFWATER SPORT ‘Don’ts’ for Swimmers Given by City Health Officer. The traditional advice of hanging your clothes on the hickory limb and passing up the water is not advocated by Dr. Herman O. Morgan, city health officer. With the bathing season imminent. Morgan today praised swimming as a healthful exercise in which every muscle in the body Is brought into play, hut warned those who take to the water to observe precautions, if they would swim again. “Both young and old swimmers should begin with short distances," said Morgan. "Tjater when the muscles of the body are in pYoper tone, longer swims may he tried."
Weak Hearts Persons who suffer from weak heart muscles or heart lesions should never attempt long swims, as these troubles ckuse the greatest number of drownings, according to Morgan. "They call it cramps when it’s really acute dilation of the heart." Morgan stated. Never plunge into the water too soon after eating if you would avoid rf.n overstrained heart, was Morgan’s advice. Remaining for a long period In the water causes malaise and cular weakness, making the exercisH harmful intead of helpful, Morgan said. Persons in middle life should refrain from exerting themselves to the extent younger swimmers do, according to Morgan. Holes Dangerous Those who swim In “holes" unsupervised by the recreation department are taking their lives In their hands, he said. White River and Eagle Creek contain numerous step-offs and undercurrents unknown to swimmers. At the recreation pools and beaches safe areas are designated and attendants are on duty at all times to rescue persons who venture out beyond their depth. Instructors also are available for amateur swimmers.
