The Tangle LETTER FROM LESLIE PRESCOTT TO RUTH ZURKE, CONTINUED. Ruth, I have never known such a sickening terror asil knew at that moment. I couldn’t speak, but almost unconsciously I took Jack’s hand and pressed it down on the newel post, and, turning away from it, toward Jack I whispered, “It’s blood.” I felt Jack puli his hand away quickly and give a little shudder, but before he could speak we heard the noise of a high-powered motor driving off. “I’m not sure, Ruth, if you know just how the house is arranged since I have had it remodeled. The big center hall I left intact as well as the two drawing rooms which are on the right, as you enter the front door. As you step into the hall, the staircase, you remember, goes up directly in, its center. I threw the two rdoms on the left side of this hall into a kind of a library-living room, which was where Sydney and I were sitt&ng the night before. As the noise oiVthe motor became fainter Jack profanely exclaimed at the lack of light, but providentially at this moment there was a flickering glow from the other end of the hall under the stairway and we heard Benson’s voice saying quaveringly, “Mr. Prescott, what is the matter? Is any one hurt?” “Burglars, I think. Bring those candles here. They’ve evidently cut the electric wires.” Jack snatched the candlesticks hastily from the butler's hand and marched into the library. Everything seemed perfectly all right until I caught a view of the open safe. “Jack, the safe is open,” I almost scraimed. Without a word, Jack went into the hall to telephone, taking the can-

Ruth, it must have been terribly funny if any one could have seen it. ‘There was Jack stalking forward in his mussed pajamas, a .candlle in each hand held out stiffly in front of him, his hair absolutely on end and trailing behind was I, in a very thin prehid nightdress, while close beside me was Benson, our butler, who is English and proper to the last degree, his long lean shanks hanging below his flapping flannel nightshirt. Jack listened at the phone for a moment, frantically clicking the hook. Then, throwing the receiver down, he exclaimed, “Damn them,

Martha Lee Says HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES NOT READY_ TO MARRY
Commencement time is here, with all its hopes and ambitions and romances. High school romances! Many folk look back upon them now, and laugh to think how seriously they took their “puppy love.” Others look back upon them, then smile across at the mates with whom they went through school and to whom they returned when marrying time came around.
Still others look back and wonder how they could have been eo mistaken. They often are the ones who rushed from school into marriage, only to discover that the world outside of school is far different from that in the classroom. The sweet girl graduate may know how to cook and sew. but she has not bumped up against the world. She is not ready for the responsibilities of marriage. And the young man graduate may be certain he can conquer the world, but a wife and perhaps children will handicap him if he marries before he has even started on his march of triumph. If the bloom of a school romance will not last through a few years, while the young people go through college or into the business world, and learn life out of school, then it would not last through the first hard years of marriage. As Schooldays End Dear Martha Lee: I am a girl 17 year* o!d and I will graduate from Technical High School th s year I have been going with a boy who is in my class for two years He has a job promised when he gets out of school and be wants me to marry him right away. I love him. but my mother wants me to wait. Hi* mother wants him to go to college. He uaed to want to. but now he want* to get married instead. What shall I do? WORRIED WANDA. Wait, Wanda. Seventeen is so very young. What if you do wait three or four years, or even five or six? Don’t worry about losing the young man. If his love will not outlast a few years in college, or out. it is better to know it now than to marry him and then watch

him drift away, And you, too, may change, even though you do not think that possible now. Your character and ideals still are in the process of formation. His Stories Vary Dear Miss Lee: I am in love with a fellow and he says he loves me. A few weeks ago I found he had been with a girl who pretended to be my heat frlnd. He boughi me a ring that was supposed to be an engagement ring, but he told her it was only a present, we had a fuss the other night and he asked for the ringWhen we made up he said he had lost It. I believe she hsa it. I am not jealous, but it has hrokeu my heart. He doesn't allow me even to speak to a boy friend. Please tell me what to do. BROKEN HEARTED. Let him go, if he acts the autocrat and varies his stories ns you indicate he does You give him too much power by agreeing not to speak to boy friends when you know he does speak to girl friends. And if he takes advantage of your love and trust it is better to know it now. There seems to be a preference for failles and ribbed fabrics rather than satins foi spring costumes. Satin-backed crepes are almost inevitably used with the dull surface to the fore.
