SHEPHERDJURY FIXING CHARGE FACING FAILURE Suspect Ready to Enter General Denial cf Tampering. 811 United Press CHICAGO, May 28.—State’s Attorney Robert E. Crowe’s case of attempted jury bribing against William D. Shepherd’s lawyers faced definite collapse today. The only suspect is to be exonerated and no fresh charges have been made. .lames C. Callan, a ward politician, who was accused of trying to “tamper” with Phili Harry, was ready to come into court and enter a complete denial. Since Barry is the only witness against him—and more than one witness is needed to make a case—Callan will go free. Contentions of Crowe that witnesses have been tampered with may have greater success when Robert White, missing nearly two weeks, is found and returned to Chicago. White, in a letter to Crowe’s office, declared that he ran away because hoi feared violence at the hands of Shepherd’s attorneys. He said, however, that he would return for the' trial and testify for the State against Shepherd. SHAW CASE GIVEN TO JURY f (Turn to Page 15) on the part of Indianapolis police and Prosecutor Remy, baffled in attempts to solve the mystery,” Klvett said. “I pray almighty God my boy shall never be cast in hands such as yours,” Kivett fairly screamed, shaking his fist under the nose of Detective Jesse McMurtrie, who was sitting at the prosecutor’s Aable. "All the forces under heaven could not tie Shaw or me or any other colored man in an automobile at night with a murdered person,” said W. S. Henry, Indianapolis colored attorney defending Shaw. Joseph K. Brown, colored, also defending Shaw, read several famous cases in which Justice had miscarried through circumstantial evldence, later found to be wrong.
