Norfolk and Western led the rails reaching anew high on the move at 132%. With the speculative group convinced that a technical reaction was in order after last week’s extensive advances, profit taking and professional selling gained greater insistency in the late morning. Pressure from these sources resulted in sizeable recessions among market leaders from recent highs. Baldwin at 113 was off 4Vi points; U. S. Steel at 117®4 off 2%; American Can at 190 off 4; and General Electric at 280 Vi was off 7. PRICES ON RAW SUGAR DECLINE Refiners Refuse to Buy at Higher Levels. NEW YORK, May 25. sugar prices have fallen to the previous low record of the year because refiners generally have shown no disposition to buy at higher levels, declares Federal Sugar Refining Company in its review of the industry. Extremely quiet conditions have prevailed in the raw sugar market and the demand for new business has continued disappointing in all directions. Asa result prices for refined sugar have declined, but these decreases have not stimulated demand to any material extent. There is only a moderate demand for withdrawals against outstanding contracts. With heavy rains reported in variout parts of Cuba, present indications are that the current crop will amount- to 5,100,000 tons. The 88 centrals which have completed operations report an outturn of 14,802, 678 bags (2,114,668 tons) as compared to the original estimate of 13,241,000 bags and last year’s output of 11,424,884 bags. There are 95 mills still in operation as compared with only 49 at this time last year. GRAIN FUTURES HOLD STEADY Wheat Interest Slow at Opening. Un United Peru* CHICAGO. May 25. —Grain futures opened unchanged to fractionally higher on the Chicago Board of Trade today. Interest in wheat was not very active. Freakish drop in temperatures brought complaints from middlewest and northwest regions that created a small wave of buying in futures. Spot was slow on account of heavier world’s shipments and a sharp drop in cables. Corn lacked aggressive support. Commission houses were on both sides of the market. September had a fractional advance on lower temperatures. Oats were steady without feature. Provisions were steady with hogs and cables.
