Chickie ( Helena >. only daughter of Jonathan and Jennie Bryce, loves Barry Dunne, a younsr lawyer with Tufts & Lennon. Wealthy Jake Mjion. friend of Janina Knowles anu Amy Heaton, sends Chickie a costly pin with a love note and arranges so her father does not lose on his oil investment. Jake tells Chickie he considers . Barry s feeling only a boy's love, and that he will be waiting when Barry has jilted her. Chlekie fears the fate that befell Stella Wilson because of her lengthy engagement, and at Bess Abbott's wedding subtly fries to urge Barry to think of their marriage, as a present possibility, even though he believes he cannot afford it. He is hopeful when Ha Moore's father expects to engage him to represent locally Gulf Steamship Company of Francisco, and wires for him. In Barry's absence, Mary's brother. Jimmie Blake, renews his attentions and Chiekje shudders at his faith in her. Barry returns with the deal unsettled. One day he tells Chickie he must work that night. She thinks be is with Ila. and when he finds her spying on him they quarrel, ( Days pass and no word from him. They would go hack to the glad beginning—lnto the sun again—carefree. He should not look at her with dubious, unhappy eyes, but only to see how dear she was.. And she would never question him again. She would be blithe, flippant, pretty as a flowet. For this was the Chickie he loved. So she laughed merrily at him from her window: she met him gaily. Even when he phoned twice that week, saying he couldn’t see her; he had to work, she responded bree: . "Tish —work if ye will! As for me I loaf. Mr. Red!" Sometimes a stealthy fear kept creeping about her thoughts, whispering: “He’s not so eager. He's growing moody. You don't hold him as you did. Notice that he doesn't tell you how beautiful you are!" She shut this down with a contemptuous: “I know it by now. don't I? He's said it enough. Why bore me with repetitions?" She had to say things like this to herself often.
